Default ap1 vs. almost stock '02 WRX

So me and my friend went out tonight to see how our cars would match up against each other. In my mind I thought it'd be really close from a roll since our s2k has a tiny bit more power with less drivetrain loss. However, from a dig I think he'd have the advantage with his AWD.

I usually drive an '04 M3 and I can launch that at about 5000 rpm and come out great. Even if i'm not at 5k it's not so bad because the power can just launch the car anyways. The s2k is so different!! You have to launch this thing at 6k and if you don't get it right you're completely screwed. On the first run I got a tiny bit of wheelspin and he got the jump but by the time I hit middle of 2nd I reeled him in and by 3rd I was gone. From a roll starting from 2nd at around 5500 rpm, it was very even and extremely close. I came to the conclusion that between these two cars, it's a drivers' race. Whoever can launch the s2k good will beat the WRX. Btw he has an HKS muffler but the rest is stock and he's running cats.

One thing I noticed is the 1-2 shift sometimes grinds if you're really trying to accelerate. Is this true on most s2ks or are my synchros going bad? I wouldn't say it happens all the time but often enough to point out. I'd say 1 out of every 5 times I do a fast 1-2 shift, it doesn't go in as smoothly as the other 4 times. Anyways...it was fun but there are a TON of cops out for the Labor Day weekend so be careful out there guys.

2nd gear @5500rpm to what mph? The S should start pulling up top, that's if you did go into the triple digits. WRX loses from a roll do to it's AWD, it's not even a driver's race between both cars.

It was to triple digits and I did come out ahead. It's just hard to get them from a stop because his launch gets me every single time. I feel so bad launching the car from such a high rpm. In my M3 I don't give a shit because they'll cover it

That's call torque, the S don't have much. Launching @6k is the right rpm, better to spin them wheels then break a diff.

i think it's just the angle u're pulling the gear when going into 2nd very quickly from 1st. usually i find that i just have to pull the gear lever more toward me, then it wouldn't grind.

but yea stock for stock an s2k will embarrass an 02 rex, even if the rex has basic bolt-on's.

I dunno about embarass but it should definitely come out ahead based on how me and my friend ran.

the STI wasn't broken in yet. those mods are hardly enough for such an outcome.

i've beaten 2 wrx's from a dig, no launches. one of them I walked from the beginning but in his defense he weighed about 300lbs. the other had his rear bumper at my front but i passed him by 3rd gear, with passenger.
