last night I pulled up next to a nice WRX STi with an aftermarket exhaust at a stop light. I wasn't going to race him (I don't do that) but I think he thought I wanted to race when I looked over and said, "What's UP mutha-f*cka?! You got yo pink slip handy? Hope you got money for a taxi, BIIIIITCH!"*

the light turns green and we both roll forward and I start to give it some gas then let off as he pulls ahead a car length. right then his car backfires a coupe times and I even see blue flames.

did he just put a nitrous shot in, but since he let off the throttle, it ended up combusting out the exhaust?

Running very rich with a straight through exhaust (no cats, etc) will do that. The hot exhaust will cause the unburnt fuel to catch fire, resulting in a fireball out of the exhaust.

He had to running a catless straight through exhaust like Pakisho said. Also on the STi/EVO when people change to a 100% atmos. venting BOV it'll make the car run real rich when it blows off, because those cars use MAFs and the ECU already calculated the air that's being vent off. It's hard to throw flames with the stock BPV or a recirc. BOV, but if he had the likes of a HKS SSQV then it'll throw fireballs pretty easily.
