m3 vs. evo
Good E46 M3's drivers run high 12's or low 13's at 106-107 mph. My best trap was 107.8x mph so I do believe 108 is possible in a stock 6 speed. Althoug there is a video of a stock M3 with aftermarket rims and tires only that ran a 12.6x and his trap was 106.xx but his 60' are way better than mine...lol.
All this talk about M3 vs EVO and only one person mentioned the EVO has AWD and the M3 has RWD. This is very important. An AWD car will rape any RWD car off the line. It is that simple (there are some, very few, instances to prove my point wrong). Even if it is for a few seconds or less. You can take an EVO and annihilate the new Cobra with 390hp. The Cobra will catch up but you will be at least 1 car length ahead of it after a launch off the line. I know from experience. I had a 2000 Audi S4 and when I took it to the drag strip I would destroy all cars off the line but then they would catch up and pass me because they had more horsepower.
Most failed to mention driver skill. I don't care what car it is or how much horsepower it has, it all depends on driver skill. Put me in an S2K versus someone less skilled and I will own them dirty. I couldn't tell you how many times I have raced cars that were faster than mine but since the guy didn't know how to drive I would start pulling away. Just to give you an example, I was at Moroso once and this older man just bought a new 911 Turbo with 200 extra horses. I can't remember what he did to the car but anyways. He ran on the track and got like 13.7. WTF is that? 13.7 in a 600+ car with AWD? Please just get out and transfer the car in my name. Your not worthy LoL.
Power to Weight Ratio. Another important factor. How does an S2000 pull away from a 350Z with 287 horses from a roll? Because the S2K is lighter. I remember when they released the specs for the 350Z before it came out. They were giving the car 1/4 mile times of 14.4 or whatever. That is pathetic. I ran 14.4 in my S4 and the S4 weighs just as much if not more. And the S4 has AWD taking alot away from the 250hp to the flywheel. If the Z weighed 3,000lbs, it would be one hell of a car. I don't want to bash the 350Z because it is a great car but the extra weight bothers me.
OK, so back to the EVO vs M3 race. The M3 has 333hp and 260lb-feet torque weighing in at 3,458lbs and the EVO has 271hp and 273lb-feet torque weighing in at 3,263lbs (if my numbers are wrong, bite me :-). So basically, the M3 wins a race from a roll every time taking driver skill into consideration. The M3 has a substantial amount of hp over the EVO. Also the EVO loses alot of the 271 flywheel hp because of the AWD.
As for highway racing, the M3 will pull away from the EVO every single time. German cars are designed to have more power at the higher end. Autobahn anyone?
One more thing. Take a stock EVO, add intake, exhaust, performance ECU and the EVO should destroy the M3. I do not know the numbers but the exhaust and ECU alone will take away some of the restriction and allow for a substantial amount of hp gain. Take care all.
