I was driving my beater "gay blue" 1990 Miata over to a friends house yesterday. There are 2 right turn lanes; I was in the outside turn lane and needed to be on the inside lane so I could make a turn into the complex a little ways ahead. I figured I'd just take the turn quick so I could get ahead of the car next to me and change lanes. I look over at the car next to me and see a young (20 something) guy in a G35 with big chrome wheels. When I light turns green he immediately punches it. I figure I'll go ahead with the plans and just see what happens.
My Miata is stock power-wise except for the gutted the cat (it was horribly clogged and busted up inside, so I cleaned it out ). The car does have some suspension work though and handles like it's on rails. With it's springs, shocks, sways, about 100lbs weight reduction and Azenis, it will destroy my S2000 through a turn so you can imagine what it will do to a G35
We take off even but partway through the turn he has to back out of the gas and I hear the automatic shift to 2nd. I stay WOT through the whole turn and manage to pull about a car length before we straiten out. The G35 is back on the gas but I've already got a few mph on him and some momentum built up. It took a few seconds for him to stop my pull and slowly begin coming back on me. I have no idea what speed we ended up taking it to, but it seemed like forever. Once he'd reeled me in and pulled about 1/2 a length on me I shut down and he just kept on going.
I almost died laughing at the poor guy. It was SOOO much closer than I could have ever expected. Just a case of a 300hp fat, poorly geared automatic, with 35lb wheels getting one heck of a run from a 100hp, 1900lb little beast. Even in defeat, I thought the little car represented itself well. If only I'd been in the S2000
*Edit: Didn't intend to offend anyone with the "gay blue" comment. That's what everyone I know calls it and frankly, I can't come up with a better way to describe the color, pic for reference*
