you've got a true 14% advantage by whp (214/188=1.14) and the advantage in 4.77s is 16% until you shift, then its reversed and back and forth through the shift points. the true improvement is considerably less than 16% after 1st gear because of this. I've seen it calculated out with ratios at each shift point for 4.10 and 4.77, but basically, the 16% assumption neglects that when he shifts to 2nd, you're still in first for a moment, and you have the advantage until you hit 2nd, when he takes over again.

But it sounds like he shifts slow and you dropped the clutch to start. In this case, he's toast, plain and simple, even if he had a full 16% advantage, because 16-14%=2% advantage=a lot less advantage than your jump start or the slow/bad shifts makes.
Thats why 4.44's are the best comprimise. All gears have a comprimise somewhere in the power band and shift point. 4.44 give you a perfect one shift to 60 with the added tq multiplication above stock. I believe a bolt on 4.44 car will typicly pull on a bolt on 4.77 with the same power/driver. I use a bolt on car for example because this added 10-20 tq/hp moves the power band into a more efficient sweet spot for the 4.44's gear comparison. 4.10 gears on a stock Ap1 is really pretty numb when you compare to some simple mods that can realy liven her up well.

I can't emagine how a FI 4.77 car could feel like your doing anything other then shifting all the time. Your spending more time shifting the car then actualy giving the gear a chance to build speed and cover ground efficiently. Yes we have a peaky low tq car but this set up for the sake of argument is just to extreme to be the best way to get your car down the track the quickest.

Shift points are dialed in at the sweet spot with the 4.44. 4.77's probably are more fun, but fun doesn't win drag races. When looking at all the factors involved in making your car cover ground to a given location first, I am sold on the 4.44's as my next upgrade. Hope I ruffled a few feathers

Hey larry, we gotta race again and try not to mis-shifts so their wont be any doubt.

From what i read with gears, if you miss a shift or shift slow, you lose all the advantage of the gears since your losing top speed in each gear.

We can try from a dig, but you know what can happen. Or we can do a 15mph role like last time and this time Ill drop the clutch to make it the same..

you also have more HP at redline. MY00-01 ECU richens up like a MOFO from 8100-9000RPM. After peak HP at 8300, power falls off the map. MY02-03 ECU's were leaned out, and it resulted in close to 15rwhp at redline over a similar MY00-01. Peak power is the same, but the MY02-03 powerband is smoother.

Sounds about right, as you have the ECU advantage and you are also probably getting 5-10hp from the intake/tp/exhaust combo. Either of you running aftermarket rims?

Like it was said earlier, gears can only give you so much.

People put too much weight in gears and how they are the holy grail of performance mods. If you really want to make a quick s2k, practice driving and building and all around well performer,
gears
headers
exhaust
cai
or even FI if you budget allows.

Every little bit helps and remember the rough calculation, 100lbs equal about .1 sec in the quarter, or something like that.

either way be careful racing and have fun.

FYI - I am S/C, headers, TP, Exhaust, 4.44 gears. With street rubber on a track with stock suspension I have passed 02-03 carrera's like they are standing still before my gears and I flew past my friend with bolted on mods and 4.57r gears, also before gears. I was surprised at how hard he pulled enough to purchase my gears.

Either way go with Comptech reinforced Diff housing since they are selling them again. to comptech and great to have them back.
