Default My 02 vs. turboed Eclipse !

First of all I live in a very small county and everyone knows just about everyone. This guy around here has been building up his eclipse and finally got it running. He has a jdm motor, t3/t4 turbo, cams, etc. the whole nine yards. He said the dyno was a little over 400+ to the wheels. So Im driving down the road with th top down last night and see a big group of my buddies yelling for me to turn around. I came back and everyone was wanting me and him to run them. So we ride around and get to our deserted racing road and line em up. In my head I am thinking I know he is about to kill me. ( All I have is an Intake) So we start from about a 35 and he got the jump ,but we stayed even almost the entire race. Whenever I shifted I would get about an inch or two closer. At the start, when he got the jump, my cars front was at about the middle of his car , but in the end I had him by a bumper. Then he strated saying he had a boost leak at around 6k ,but who knows. He said when he gets it fixed we will run them again. How bad do you think he will beat me if thats true? If I get gears before then should I be able take him?

if he actually is making over 400whp he will slaughter you. him having a boost leak would make sense bc he lost alot of boost that way. i think he was probably telling the truth about the boost leak or doesnt have 400+whp bc something doesnt add up. if he really has that much power, and you got gears, even the 4.77's, youd still get manhandled. 400+whp is waaaaay too much for a relatively stock S to tango with

Yeah, I think he is Bsing. My other buddy said he seen the dyno sheet and he was only making a little less than 300whp ,but I would still think he would at least pull on me.

400 whp is a lot. It doesnt sound like he has that much. My eclipse dyno'd at 353 to the wheels and I had alot done to mine.

well first off there are no such things as 'JDM eclipse motors.' eclipses were made by a company called diamond star motors which was based out of ohio i believe. the only japanese cars to feature the 4g63 motors were the evo's and an older truck called the cyclone, and the one 2g eclipse brought into japan which was the front wheel drive turbo convertibles. cyclone motors are typically regarded as 'jdm.' they make an extra 10 hp or so.

either way, most t3/t4 setups on a dsm should spank us out. i've had a few of these and they go way faster than an s2k even if they put down a bit more than 300 to the wheels. sounds like a big boost leak/bad tuning to me.

Yeah, thats my fault. I meant a dsm motor. ( to busy thinking of our Hondas) Its not a country , its a county. Baker County , Fl. I thought he would spank the living s**t out of me ,but there must be something horribly wrong with the engine and turbo setup or something.

dsm's are notorious for having a couple of set backs and some guys forget to even check them. one massive weakness is the stock MAS. they are a terrible design and are a bitch to work around. only recently have there been conversion options with these (the MAFT) that lets DSM guys use maf's from other cars that actually flow better. this is very handy for the guy that doesn't want to go full blown EMS. it also gives you the option to physically relocate the maf to the upper i/c piping , allowing you to meter air after the blow off valve eliminating the need to close loop your excess air and instead dump to the atmosphere. this is not a big deal performance wise but guys that do not recirculate on a stock mas will find the car running very rich between gears as the ecu will be supplying fuel for air that isn't showing up in the combustion chamber.

trannys and drivetrain are a disaster in these cars as well. things tend to break more on the all wheel cars, but all the trannys are notchy and not very suited towards racing in the first place. my brother's old drag car got a custom built B&M tranny and it was the best mod for the money at that point. we all know that nothing slows you down more than a bad shift (well maybe a blown motor too, but hey thats another thread)

then again it could as well just be bad tuning, crappy clamps, or possibly just a big fat liar of a driver t3/t4 turbos come in many flavors so its difficult to really tell whats up.

woah! rant. sorry.

That would be an Evo III motor son. They are about the same as the USDM 4g63 DSM motor.
