Default S2000 vs. 1996 Z28

Tonight I raced some guy in a 1996 Z28 Camaro. He said all he had was intake and exhaust. All I have done to my car is an INJEN CAI. We went from a dead stop and I dropped my clutch at 7,500 RPM. I was actually supposed to slip it but I got a little to excited I guess. I got wheel spin through the whole intersection, but when the tires grabbed, boy did it!! It just shot me forward like there was no tommorow!! Anyways, through first and second gear, I was ahead by about a car. Then in third gear he started to catch up, and by the middle of fourth gear (pretty much 1/4 speed) he had me by about a car and thats when we both slowed down for the red light. He had one passanger and I had none. I know were supposed to be able to take these cars when there stock. Did his intake and exhaust help him out that much to beat me or do you think he had more than what he said?

Nice race. Maybe it was all that tire spin you had going on?

He either had more mods than he said, or he had an LS1 (he lied about the year?), or you are shifting too slow. (no offense) He shouldn't have pulled on you. Particularly the LT1's. Even with the mod he had. An LT1 really loses power in 3rd gear. Check my race (video) with a stock LT1 at this thread here....

Sounds about right. You have to realize that LT1's aren't as high strung as your engine from the factory. A CAI and exhaust could easily give you 20 RWHP on an LT1. The stock exhaust and airbox are very restrictive, thats how GM "detuned" the LT1 from the vette for f-body duty. An S2k doesn't gain nearly as much from the same mods because the stock stuff is pretty good, it has to be to get 240hp out of a 2 liter I4. A stock LT1 would be a drivers race with an S2k, considering they both run low 14's with a few people getting high 13's. FWIW with full exhaust and a CAI I trapped 81.2 mph in the 1/8 and 104.7 in the 1/4 on my best run, I don't notice any power loss in third and fourth . Good run.

3rd gear is not an LT1's weak gear. Its the strongest in my opinion. With intake and exhaust, an LT1 is capable of 104 trap speeds. Add headers and that goes up to 105-106 trap speeds.

Exactly what I would have said. The LT1 in a Z or TA is VERY constricted as far as airflow goes.

Not a suprising outcome
