I have large, generic, translucent rubber mats that cover entire floor, including the cross brace and under the seat. They also "bend" at the sides, so that even the edges are protected and all the dirt/water is "caught" in them.
Yeah, I have to tug 'em back occassionally as they slip forward (never enough to interfere with pedal action though) and they look....well, who actually looks at the floor when driving? Who cares? It does the job of a good floor mat: Protect the carpet!
