As I indicated in the PM about odd noises that weren't there before, don't get paranoid about it, but try to be objective when you listen for them. You have a "not new" car, the history of which has not been revealed. By bouncing off the rev limiter for as long as you did (and 4 seconds is a long time to hold your foot down on the gas) in neutral, you are redlining an engine under NO load. We've discussed this before on this forum about how it's not so good a thing to run an engine that fast with no load. Rather than giving due regard to the top end of the engine, in such instances, we should be paying more attention to the bottom end ("big end"). The crank (and associated bits) takes a beating when there is no load, but also keep in mind that the bottom end of an S2000 engine is one of the toughest there is.

Maybe the 'Odd smell' was the smell of scorched clutch? Did you slip the clutch a lot from high RPM getting it back in gear from the redline revs?

I don't drive my S2000 very often these days as I am very busy, but I took it for a spin last night. I think I put around 45 miles on it. Anyhoo, on my way back home, I was accelerating up through the gears. As I was approaching redline in second gear, I anticipated a quick shift into third gear. I waited just a tad too long to perform the shift and I believe I hit the rev limiter for about 2/10's of a second.

Since I have owned my S2000, in the last 19k miles, I have hit the rev limiter less than 10 times. The good thing about hitting it once or twice is that it teaches you how many engine revs you can use before the rev limiter kicks in. It will teach you to use as many engine revs as possible and to shift quickly before the limiter kicks in.

As I stated above, I don't drive my S2000 very often, so I was a tad bit rusty. That is my excuse.

That's what I was thinking. 1 second is more than long enough for me.

When you are redlining in 3rd gear, then accidently drop the shifter into 2nd instead of 4th ... then that's overrev. The rev-limiter is there to prevent over-rev in your situation.

is the smell normal???.... I mean people bounce off the rev limiter all the time..right???

thanks for your help!

Hitting (and bouncing off) the rev limiter won't hurt anything, but shouldn't result in any strange smells. The fact that you detected an abnormal smell concerns me. What else happened? (Did you slip the clutch a bunch when you got the car back into gear?)

I have attempted to coax him into giving more details about the kind of smell it was. And does it still smell like that? We tend to "think" it might be clutch smell, but without the OP's input on this, it may be an incorrect assumption.
What did it smell like? Cat piss? Steam? Burnt oil? How long did the smell persist?

Strange smell? I'll take a guess on what it is...

it was sort of like a burnt smell...maybe clutch... I took the car out yesterday...and you could still kinda smell it under the hood (not as much)
