Default '01 stock speaker upgrade

I'm not very good with car audio, and I'd like someone to please help. My dad has a '01 s2k, and he always complains about how much the speakers suck. We went on handaaccessories.com and found speaker upgrades for it, and it says its a direct replacement. Well, we were thinkin of gettin those, but we weren't sure how to install em. It says direct replacement, but i was searching a buncha threads and i kept seeing stuff about how u need to cut a box, or how certain speakers wouldnt fit etc. Well, can anyone help me out as to, how to replace teh speaker? which ones would fit perfectly? how do i wire it? I'd really like to avoid cutting and drilling.. wiring stuff i can probably do, but how do i do it? and are there any good speakers besides the ones on that site i can get for under 50 bucks? any help would be appreciated thanks.

I've done the replacement you're talking about -- swapped my MY 2000 speakers for the current Honda version, which I got from HandA.

They are indeed direct replacements, including the plugs. I used the FAQ that describes how to remove the door panels, and found I didn't have to cut or solder anything. The whole operation took me less than an hour, and I was being very careful. Now that I know how I could do it in 15 minutes.

The improvement was enormous. Maybe it's not as good as some of the more elaborate speaker installations, but it's a lot cheaper and easier and well worthwhile. Go for it.

I put in some Sony 1635M and they sound great. The only modification is to cut some material out of the basket that sits behind the speaker in the door. It is a simple procedure you can do with a craft knife or strudy scissor. The whole process, including removing the door pannel was about 15min a side. I highly recommend it. Cutting the basket is not necessary for some speakers, but if you can fit in a speaker with a larger magnet assembly, I HIGHLY recommend it. Much better sound. These speakers are a three way design. They cost me about $80 on the web. Also, if you cut the speaker basket and then later decide to go back to stock, for whatever reason, replacing the baskets is only about $15.

Andy

PS, removing the door panels in this car is the easiest I've ever done.

I started a post in the Electronic forum on this over the weekend but basically all I did was bet the Sony 1621 Xplod speakers, took of the door panel, dropped in these speakers. No cutting needed at all to the speaker basket. Just had to tie in the new speaker wire to the existing wire. It sounds SOOOOOOOO much better that those lame OEM ones.

Lucids rear speaker upgrade with amp and his wire harness are the next step

The Sonys in my sig cost around $80 from Crutchfield and the difference was tremendous. Then, this fall I got Lucid's rear speaker mod w/ Polks and the improvement was equally impressive.

Crutchfield will give you the Honda connectors, and Lucid gives you everything you need too. You might wanna check with Lucid to see if he does a package including front speaker replacement too. I would definately go with upgrading fronts and adding rears cause at 45 mph or above, with the top down, a simple front replacement just doesn't cut it.

I swapped with the Kenwood 1677 (I think) and they were a direct replacemant. No cutting of the basket and a major improvement. I also added a little MTX amp later and an even better improvement.

Yes I'm doing a complete bundle with JVCs (on the main page of my site) for under $250 complete (4 speakers, instructions, door speaker harnesses, rear speaker harness). The Door speakers are drop in 2-way 6.5" They're Ideal if you don't have or want to put in tweeters. The highs are very crisp.
