260hp v6 isn't really competing with a ferrarri, lambo by any means. Porsche, possibly. Other than the exclusivity aspect in which IMO was more along the lines of "Why in the world would you spend 90K on that?" Don't get me wrong, amazing car... but it doesn't hold it's weight in the performance per $ category. But it looked like one, so I guess that counts
Just throwing this out there but I had a copy of the 2005 Sales Training Brochure for the NSX before I passed it along to a fellow member (Kyras). Inside the brochure there was a 4 car comparison detailing the NSX vs. a Corvette, a Ferrari 360, and a Porsche Carrera.

I do believe the NSX really was targeting those lower end high performance cars and to show the world that you could have an exotic that would last as a daily driver.

Just my 2 cents.....

I am sure that making an 18k four cylinder is possible. But what would the need for this be?? Not to many people are going to buy a 18k car. could you imagine how loud the motor would be.
I got pulled over the other day for "driving at a safe speed". The police office even told me I wasn't speeding. Basically I got pulled over for redlining my S2K when I was turning onto a major road. If my S2K rev'd to 18k instead of 8250 I am sure he would have skipped the ticket and taken me to jail.

(Yes I am fighting to citation by the way)

YEP!
I agree

I add that the first gen NSX was not a great car. Honda improved it in later years and I saw a video that it did beat the Porsche and compete really well with the other supercars. Now we're talking competing on a track, not on a drag race 0-60

The NSX was made to compete with the super cars and it was done with a fraction the cost the super cars cost

My S2K revs to 18K, doesn't yours? I just took the rev limiter off and added another tach. It pulls harder now.

OP: You need to ride a sport bike to get a satisfactory answer. In short:

Maybe not 18K rpm, but 14K rpm is certainly doable. Reliably. Engine will last a long time. No exotic material or space technology needed.

So why not? Everyday usability (Rough and high idle, Peaky power delivery) and terrible fuel economy.

Yeah wow, the inertial mass of the components would require alloys and manufacturing techniques that would cost a ton. Each fuel injector alone would have to fire 75 times per second.
