i had a 5 speed miata before, it was so awkward to shift 6th.
my salesperson was very nice, he owned an 05 s2000 in red as well and he waited 1 min of me looking for the release before he showed me.

^Now that's funny.

I essentially bought the '02 brand new, sight unseen, and never test driven an S; I just knew I wanted one, and placed my order in October '01 for an '02 to be delivered in April '02. I too was very well read on the car, but that 1mph reading really threw me.

my buddy ran into every single issue here: the gas door, reverse, and the secret compartment. it took him 3 years before he found out that there was a secret compartment...

Haha. I remember this exactly. Left the dealership sooo excited that I forgot to ask all the simple questions. Went straight to the gas station to fill up and took me a good 5 minutes(felt like forever) to find it. Still pretty embarassing when you have all these people looking at you and the car wondering what the hell I was doing.
salesguy i purchased from offered me $10 if i could find the gas release in 1 minute. i failed... wish i had lurked on here awhile before buying.
didn't find the secret compartment till someone bumped the thread on here... about 8 months after i bought the car.

When I test drove the car for the first time, the dealer let me and my girl take it out without supervision. I didn't know how to get the car into reverse and the car was parked on a slope in front of a pole. I tried to back out, but only had the car in 6th and therefore drifted slowly right into the pole. The dealer came out, backed me up and STILL let me go out alone. I was coming from a 330i that had traction control and decided to take the S straight to the backroads. On the first part of the road the tail kicked out but I fortunately kept it under control. Then I realized I was out of gas, no bars at all, and of course pulled over to fill up. I must have spent 15 minutes trying to open the tank and randomly pulled the little switch with complete and utter luck. To make matters worse, I had to wait forever for a pump because I wss afraid at that point to try and put the car into reverse so that I could position myself for one that was already open. Finally, while trying to open the gas tank I inadvertently popped the hood. When I tried to put the hood down, it didn't close fully. I was afraid to really slam the hood not realizing that it just needed a bit more downward force.... I drove the car all the back to the dealership with the hood down but unlatched. When I returned the salesman of course simply opened it back up and slammed it down like a man while I sat and watched like a little boy. Hilarious! Nonetheless, I loved the car, bought it, and am happily driving the crap out of it now. Too funny.
