I am not saying to wait this long. But my 2001 S2000 Manual says page 148 Maintenance Schedule for Normal Conditions. Replace engine oil: "Replace every 7,500 miles or 12 months". The poster Mark_12345 ask: When was your first oil change? It has been said many times that the oil Honda puts in for the break in period contains special additives that help to seat the piston rings. Some people that have changed the oil (mostly synthetic) to soon have reported that there engines continue to burn (use) oil. I plan on changing mine at 4500 to 5000 miles unless some one can give me a good reason to do otherwise.

Turn the page on the manual. It has two oil change intervals depening upon driving conditions, normal and harsh. Normal is 7.5k, harsh is 3.7k.

will change mine at about 4500, since that will be close to one year (the time element seems to be ignored by most folks).
normal driving for this car includes vtec.
it does not include off-road use, dirty driving conditions, or excessive stop and go driving. not too many of us qualify for this definition of severe conditions!
the service manual says 7500 miles or 12 months for normal
or 3750 or 6 months for severe conditions.
for me the time is the important factor, not the mileage!

Wait until the recommended 3750miles and then start your chosen schedule. The factory places special additives in the oil for your cars breakin period.

Where is the myth coming from that using synthetic oil too soon will somehow not allow the engine to break in properly? Oil breaks down or becomes to dirty to properly lubricate the engine after 3000-4000 miles. I changed my oil at 3801 and again at 7498 and used Mobil 1 Synthetic. I have experienced zero problems and my engine does not use oil. Waiting to change the oil at 4 or 5000 miles does not make any sense. Engines continue to break-in for thousands of miles. Changing the engine oil at correct intervals can only help to make the engine last longer.

Maybe I'm in the extreme fringe here, but I changed my oil for the first time at 5000 miles, after 18 months of driving under 'normal' conditions, i.e. VTEC only when absolutely necessary. I checked the oil many times, and in 18 months it did not change color, at least not enough to prompt me to change it. Anyway, Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos changed the oil while I waited, and didn't think it was odd that my first change came 18 months after purchase. I guess if you baby your car, you have no worries.

When I was referring to, too soon, I meant for the first oil change.
