From UL:

Karner's F22C race engine started out as a brand new short block from Honda. It cost $2500 jobber. It came completely assembled. All we had to do was bolt on our head and sensors from the 2.0 liter. Took about 2 hours. If you didn't want to reuse your head, you could buy a new core from Honda for $1200 retail (less jobber I'm sure). You might as well reuse your cams (we did) as they only take 20 minutes to swap in (before a valve adjustment). We had a valve job done by Joe Alaniz to HC legal specs. Retail on his work was probably about $800. We also put in Ti retainers at about $300. We reused the stock TB and intake manifold. Total time to assemble the motor (and I am not a motor builder, just going by the book) was about 5 hours including the head install, cam swap and sensor swap. That's $4800 in parts if you don't reuse your head, and, if we paid someone to do the labor, about $400 there. This motor, with just an AEM EMS and some tuning put down 3 hp more than the average 350Z on my dyno, and 15 hp more than the best 2004-2005 Acura TL I've ever dyno'd - that's why I say 285-290 crank hp.
He then goes on to say that if you do a port on the intake and put a big bore t-body in you can pick up an additional 10hp, so a solid 300hp from an all motor S2000 for not outrageous sums of money sounds very, very nice to me.

Only question is longevity of the new motor with a 9k rpm redline.

Car is running well stay tuned fellas
Thats great news. I'm curious to see a dyno of the 2.2L running out to 9000rpms, especially would like to see the A/F ratios from the F20C's ECU running the F22C.

Like I said earlier, if this works right, I wonder if those of us with '04-05s could swap in a JDM/EU instrument cluster and ECU and run the F22C out to 9000rpms.

If USDM 04-05 rev to 8K how can JDM 04-05 rev to 9K, I don't understand.

Asghar.
Pretty sure the 04-05 JDM car still uses the original 2.0L engine.

As does the Aus and everywhere else except the US.

My understanding is that the 2.2 used in Karner's car still only goes to 8200rpm, just like a stock F22C1.

I'm very interested in anything to do with spinning a 2.2 to 9000rpm.

Uhm, just a thought, but it has been mentioned that perhaps the 2.2 only revs to 8200 to keep the car further from max tolerances and thereby reduce repair requirements within the original warranty period. Lets face it, Honda didn't really expect (I believe) to get all of the warranty repairs it did on S2Ks to begin with, and when the 2.2 came out, figured the best way to continue the Honda bullet-proof image was to 'reign in' the 9k redline?

Just a thought.

I know it's very early to be asking, but will there be a "kit" available to F22C owners that want to increase their redline?

I'm not fully up on all the engine issues that plagued the 2.0 engines in the first couple of years (00 & 01) but my understanding is that most of them were lubrication problems and spark plug problems (stripped threads?), etc. None of this, in and of itself, would be strictly related to the 9k redline. The later years models (02 & 03) don't seem to have these issues, at least not nearly as badly, and they still have the 9k redlines.

There are several plausible reasons why Honda reduced the redline to 8k when they stroked the 2.0 to the 2.2 engine which have all been discussed adnauseum so I won't go into them here. If they can get the 2.2 to survive reliably with a 9k redline, no one will be more pleased than I but I'd never consider modifying my MY04 unless I was convinced that I'd see no significant reduction in reliability. I intend to keep my car for a "very" long time and while the 9k redline would be nice, it's not a biggy for me!

Drive Safe,
Steve R.

Can someone confirm this?
