If you step back and look at Honda's overall marketing plan this makes real sense. There's been a lot of specualtion about the new mid/ rear engined NSX being a super car killer with a > $ 100k price tag. Honda's philosophy has been to get the younger buyers into the Honda line of cars and when they want to move up to something more sophisticated, you move into the Acura line. I have been told that is why we get the watered down versions of the Hondas here in the states. I would love to have a Type R four door or two door, wouldn't you?? This is the same marketing model US makers have used for several generations. Buy a Chevy, then a buick or Olds, and when you've really made it, buy a Cadillac. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it is obvious to this old fart.

I love my Si's and would welcome a lighter great handling car with a soft top/ stowable hardtop. That would be a great two seat play car in my mind. If they can reduce the weight of the New "S" series to yield the equivilent horsepower to weight ratio, who cares that it is less HP?? Sometimes less is more if it's part of a complete package. I welcome the new beast and can only hope I can afford the new NSX as well.

Porsche is doing the same thing with their line of cars. Have you heard of the new four door Panamerica?? The market is moving away from the enthusiasts and creating heavy luxury laden cars. If they keep moving in this direction, someone will hopefully seize the opportunity to fill the void with a great niche car that we will all love and fills our purist needs to a tee. Until then, the major manufacturer's will fill the needs of the people spending the greatest amount of money. Here's a chance for one of you future capitalist pigs (I am one also, so no insult intended) to judge the demand and fill your customer's needs.

that kind of marketing is outdated.

Have you guys been living under a rock? This is confirmation of what alot of us have known for a while now.

THE S2000 IS BEING REPLACED by a smaller all new roadster with a rwd K series and 200hp.

I wish i had the cutout from the Japanese magazine which showed this smaller Honda roadster which looks ALOT like the older S800. Its basically a retro Honda Roadster which is targeted to be a direct competitor to the Miata and possible might have 4 seats.

Its probably a good thing that its slower out of the box than our beloved S2000, but you can bet your life savings that once Spoon, Mugen, J's and all our Land of the Sun brethren get ahold of it and its rwd K platform that it'll be whipping our S something fierce. Seriously the FWD civic type R is already menace on the track vs our s2000, this new K roadster will kick some ass with some good tuning behind it.

And quite honestly thats exactly what makes owning Hondas so much fun. MODS.

But dispite all that I still will love my S2000 for exactly what it is. A freaking awesome roadster designed to perfection to appeal to people just like me. To hell with all the people who dont like the S2000's buzziness, lack of tq, and tiny interior space. Let them buy something else hehe.

its not the replacement for the S2K but a new del sol...

seriously i doubt the car will be that bad and i don't think honda will go retro in the design and make a new S800. honda designs is currently very wedge positive and i don't think they will stay away from that.

it might be an interesting car if done right and hopefully they can get the weight even lower than 2700lbs. 2700 might be a hardtop and 2500 for a soft top version would be ideal.

anyone who believes this (that includes some of the idiots who have already posted above) are idiots. clueless idiots.

Firstly, do you believe everything you read?

Secondly, do you even think for a second that Honda can magically turn around a vehicle by mid 2009 that absolutely NO ONE has heard about or seen. The S2000 debuted in 1995 as a concept before being introduced in late 1999. Cars don't develop overnight. A completely new platform for a completely new car takes time. If there was anything even remotely close to being introduced, we would already have seen spy photographs of mules/prototypes testing somewhere.
Agreed..

but also take into consideration... who the F is this website anyways? if I don't hear it from any of the top automotive media publications or see some sort of renderings first, I won't believe shit.. especially from this random-ass "how-stuff-works" website... pfffft. whatever..

Besides, I think everyone has seen the next s2000 test mule pics, longer wheel base, awd or something like that, and a v6 or something I believe it was rumored to believe... and of course the whole semi-auto sequential gearbox thingy also.. bleh, thats STILL a working test mule, showing that Honda is NOT going towards something of more of a Miata status vehicle... if they intend to do so, it will be an entire other car for Honda to produce, no ties to the S2000... just something to compete in that market that this website source speaks of.

They will either discontinue the S2000 completely or redesign it for another model year, perhaps 2011... I work closely with some of the larger car makers on the market today, Chrysler, GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, etc.. to be honest, whenever there is a new build I work on with them, IE; lighting, specifically.. lol, I tend to hear about it anywhere between 18-36mo prior to production of the vehicle.. IE; FJ cruiser ya, my predecessor was working on the bumper mounted optional rally lights, front brush guard lights, and roof-rack lights, like as far back as mid 2002...

Believe me, when Honda is ready to start research on an S2000 replacement, you will hear about it from more than one source, and there will definitely be some artist renderings at least, if not some prototypes mules..

I don't take this website seriously to be honest... I wouldn't if I were ya'll either..
just my $.02
