Bought a 1-way ticket to SF and drove home in my AP1 600 miles south to where I am now. Turned 21 nine days later. I've been enjoying the car ever since.

The insurance must be INSANE for someone who is under 23!!

I think it's about $13 more per month than my old Subaru Forester XS was.

Fluky15, the "catch" here is that USAA is insurance for Military and their families... so these rates are less than what the average 21 year old would pay.
On a side note, I wonder how many of these 21 and under guys who say they "bought their s2000" truly paid for it? It is incorrect to say you bought it if your parents bought it for you. Also, IMO if you are paying $3,000 a year for insurance on a car that is worth $20k or less... your priorities are jacked up. I pay half of that for insurance on my HOUSE and I live in a hurricane zone.

You're right, you have to in the military. I joined when I was 17; 3.5 years in my USMC contract and I can't wait to be done with it. I saved up for about 7 months for my S. As an E4 with 3+ years in with language pay and tax free zone, even if you are single it's possible to make 13-14 grand in one deployment. It doesn't sound like a lot, and to many people it isn't, but when your housing and food is paid for it's pretty good money. Married guys made about twice as much as me, especially if they were from Socal bases Pendleton and Miramar since their housing rate is nearly double of Yuma AZ. I only "blew" my money when we stopped in Thailand and HK on our way back (spent about $800 between 7 days there).
I paid for the car myself and it's paid off 100% and I'm proud that it is.
i have a hard time believing that 15 and 16 year olds bought their s2000 with their money in full. when did you have time to make that money? Maybe they bought that car with the money that is theirs, but used to be their parents' before they gave them that money

Insurance is going to be slightly cheaper now since many of the s2000 are now approximately 10 years old. Now having an 08 AP2 at the age of 18 is different. Its definitely going to be more expensive and most kids won't be able to live comfortably with that
I live in Texas and use Titan insurance for my Integra and S2000 and pay $99.14 a month for liability on the teg and full coverage on my S. I'm 19 and married so that might help.
Yes but imagine if you had a 2008 AP2. Insurance will definitely increase. When the S2000 was new, not too many teenagers could afford the insurance. I imagine the most popular S2K for teenagers are the older AP1 since the price has come down enough that many can 'afford' it. Insurance on a 2000 S2000 is going to be different than a 2009 S2000, especially for those under 21 years old. Plus many of them will only buy liability because they see no need to buy full coverage on a car that's 10-12 years old. Anything to get them into an S2000.
I agree. I have wanted to try out an s2000 for awhile but waited it out because of the ridiculous insurance costs. I think my CBR was about $3000 a year to insure when I was in high school. It was a good chunk of my paycheck, but it was worth every penny
