I have been able to do multiple shifts at high RPM from 1st to 2nd with no grind - but then, I was able to do that before. My grind has always been random and not reproducible.
On Monday (when the near-grind occurred), the car was hot, I had just driven it for about 1-1/2 hours up PCH from El Segundo to Camarillo. I was taking off from a stop sign and full throttle up to ~8700 rpm when I shifted.
Based on what I've read, there seems to be a wide variation in what people experience with their cars. It also doesn't seem like there is a guaranteed fix. Many people contend that it's just bound to occur because the synchros can't keep up with the revs, but that seems to be implausible for a car designed for such high RPMs, and why doesn't this happen in other gears?
I will be driving up to Buttonwillow this weekend, and although I won't have much 1st-to-2nd shifting, I will be driving it all day. I'll let you know if I get any grinding.
If nothing else, if Jeremy rides with you and can hear it, he may have some other suggestions or knowledge that we're not aware of - although this board has been an amazing source of realiable information on these technical issues.
Good luck!

BTW, if you can, work with the service writer named Brad. He's always totally willing to let me talk directly to the mechanics. They are often rushed early in the morning, but at least they are nice (at least to me!)

i am having similar problem. For a while I was thinking maybe i misshifted, but now you got me thinking. I have been driving manual even since I was a kid and never had this issue and it's only the second gear also.
hmm. time to call the dealer.

My car just went over 2200 miles. Over the past few weeks, when the transmission is cold, I am now getting a grind shifting into second.
I am confused as to what this grind is supposed to sound like. Mine isn't the loud metallic grind that you hear from someone trying to shift without the clutch. It's much quieter, and more muffled sounding but you definitely feel a short bit of grind though the shift knob then the shifter immediately falls into second.
This is on a 2003, shifing is at low rev's around 4000 or so.

My MY2002 has no grinding whatsoever. Our MY'00 definitely had it. My MY'02 transmission has the proverbial "shifts like butter." It's a little rough until it gets warmed up, but then it's sweeeeet.
