Default 2nd Gear Problem

Sometimes when I shift to second gear, it makes a sound coming from the gears, not grinding. It sounded like the gears hit each other before going into the proper position. It sounded when you crack you knuckle. Sometimes it goes into smoothly and sometimes it makes that noise once or twice. Could it be the syncro? BTW, second gear is the only gear I get this.

.... just for extra information, is this pre-warmup, during, after warmup? How long is the car running typically when this happens.

I always wait for the RPM to drop to around 800-900RPM, before I drive so I guess it after warmup. It happens after the pull out of the driveway most of the time. And on and off after that. Sometimes it really smooth and doesn't make a sound, and sometimes it makes that sound, like the gears are not aligned properly before they going in so they clash agasn't each other kind of sound.

Okay, warming up the car a little in the garage is not a bad thing, but that will not warm up the entire car. You need to drive it gently afterwards. I don't know if this is solely your problem, or if there is something else going on, but I would practice very gentle driving initially, then the transmission should warm up and be very smooth.

Afew AP2 (04-05) owners have mentioned a 2nd gear grind - the car will not shift into 2nd smoothly seemingly due to syncros not working. It seems to happen during warm up before things are really hot, maybe its the CDV hampering clutch release, who knows.

Letting the car idle in the garage will do nothing to arm up the transmission, btw. Do you have the CDV in still?

I don't know. I've never experienced CDV before, but I've heard it slows the rate of the clutch release. Mine has 12721miles so I doubt it. I think it's gone. My clutch releases at the rate of my left foot...Hehehe.

BTW, this only happens during upshifting.
