7 Reasons Why the S2000 Was Discontinued

Knowing what I do of Japanese culture, respect for elders and superiors, and the history of Honda and the NSX and the lead on those projects, I say that the S2000 was a pet project of Shigeru Uehara, who, also coming of the success of the NSX, was able to use his seniority to convince Honda to build a celebratory car as part of its 50th anniversary. Honda did build it, and he was able to tweak his design in the AP2 to further refine the car, but as he left Honda, so did the S2000, and the CR was his parting gift of his favorite car.
Considering how unique the S2000 is among Hondas, its easy to assume that this was the car of an individual's vision, not a corporate culture. Honda let the car live on as long as Uehara was in place, probably for respect more than profit, but it was never a money maker, more of a swan song, for the person, not the company.
But that is just my take.

Well, it certainly has the air of romance about it. I say we go with it. Adds to the cachet.

What this article (and everybody in this thread so far) is missing is the S2000 was originally only going to be sold for TWO years, as Honda's special project for its 50th. The car did so well that they just kept selling it. By the time 2009 came along, recession + 10th year of production + HP wars amongst competitors = it was time.

One of the best things about the S2000 (any S2000) is that it is a laser-focused car. Isn't trying to be a please-all. Knows exactly what it is and who its driver is. I love that they never offered it with an automatic, and if they are going to offer a new one with an automatic, I hope they never make a new one. Most of the experts seem to agree that it was the best 6MT ever.
