Default about VIN / Chassis no.

hi guys,

i just bought a s2000 here in HK, i enjoy driving it every single day~
my car was imported from foreign countries which means it's not a stock one
i would like to ask if it is possible to check the country of origin (not country of made) from it's VIN / Chassis / Engine number?
THANKS all!!!!

sk

That link might not be helpful to him since not every market follows the same standards for VIN numbers (EuDM and JDM for example).

The answer is actually no. You cannot determine the country where your vehicle was to be sold from the VIN alone.

FYI, some JDMs don't even have VINs.

Since you are in Hong kong it may be different, but I was able to call honda of America and I gave them my VIN number and they were able to tell me which dealership it was originally sold at.

The VIN for our car and any car after 1981 is a 17 character code. For the S2000:

1. J (manufactured, Japan)
2. H (manufacturer, Honda)
3. M (passenger car, made in Japan)
4-6. AP1/AP2 (chassis)
7. 1 (coupe+manual transmission)
8. 4 (grade)
9. Check digit (this is a random number - search VIN on Wikipeia to figure this one out)
10. Y, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (model year, y=2000, 1=2001, etc)
11. T, S (manufacturing plant, T=Tochigi, S=Suzuka)
12-17. Production Number

hk do have a lot of s2000s
yet u seldom see them driving coz they would only go out on weekends / nights
but i made my s2000 as my daily ride to work
the price of s2000 here varies from HKD90000 (USD11XXX) up to HKD350000 (USD4XXXX)
depends on year of made and it's condition
anyway nice to meet u all!!!!

We don't drive a coupe, and as I previously stated, this doesn't necessarily apply to non-USDM vehicles, even Hondas.
