I was in 2nd gear, and I guarentee no more than 25mph. It was a normal downshift for the turn, and I don't put the revs higher than 4k when I'm slowing down/downshifting for a turn.
So you down shifted to first in the rain doing 25mph, probably without rev matching and the sudden jolt of the rpms caused you to spin. Plus you were turning.

Actually I downshifted TO 2nd. I DID revmatch. I completed the gear change far before the turn. I used the downshift to assist in slowing down FOR the turn...
I was just going to fast... And probably accelerated out of the turn too early with too much gas for the given conditions.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever downshifted TO first... Hrmm

It depends on the conditions. I once lost the tail on my S2000 when accelerating with about half-throttle from 20mph in third gear while taking a left-hand turn. It was cold... roads were damp... it happened. Fortunately, I just fishtailed a bit and tucked it back in line.

To the original poster... be glad there wasn't any body damage or the quote would be significantly higher. $6K sounds about right for some busted suspension bits and damaged wheels (the wheels are over 400 apiece, IIRC). Also, if you decide to make a claim, keep in mind that you won't be paying for the rest of your life... generally your rates just go up for about 3 years. However, since you're already in a high-risk category, it's possible your insurance company may drop you after you file the claim, and if they don't, the premium increase will probably be significant.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

So on Christmas night I was driving to a friend's house and spun out. Taking a right turn, my back end went to the left, I did a 180, and went onto the curb (right side of the road), facing the way I came from. My 2 driver side wheels were on the curb... And I wasn't going more than 20 mph.
So now she's in the shop... There is no body damage, and only the rear wheel/suspension area is damaged. The caliper actually ATE a piece of the rotor, the suspension, wheel, controller arms, a-frame?, etc. are all messed up...
For such a minor accident, I'm estimated at $6,000. Does this sound too steep? The Honda dealer AND the shop it's at quoted about the same... But I'm just astonished. Because I'm only 17 (bought the car myself so spare yourself the "damn kids getting things given to them" speech), I don't want to go through Insurance and pay for this for the rest of my life... But $6k is a lot of money, and I'm just surprised it's so bad.

I don't want to hear about driving wrecklessly, how a young kid shouldn't have an S2000, or how in your your day you would have had another consquence. I've heard it all. Trust me.

I'm just wondering if the S2k is prone to frame damage on minor accidents, and if $6,000 seems steep for what I briefly described above. And if you know of any places that are known to get OEM parts for extremely cheap. Right now I believe my shop is just ordering from Honda... That's a killer.

-I drew a picture of the accident on MS Paint, but I cannot post it here and don't wish to host it on my Car Domain, so if anybody can help me, email me at notrque@gmail.com. I think it may be hard to understand without the picture, but ya never know.

Thanks...
Unless the road was wet or you were driving on snow I find it hard to believe that you were only going 20-25, but that doesnt really matter at this point. Either way you are going to have to pay for it. I would just make a claim and get it over with

Props to you for earning your way. Let's do some math. A collision claim may raise your rates $30 or so per month depending on what you're paying now, what insurance company you have, etc. $30 a month for 3 years is $1080. Add to that your deductible, (assuming $500) and you're at $1580. If I were you, I'd definately claim it, seeing as to how you could save yourself over $3000. Plus, most insurance companies will warranty any covered repair in addition to the warranty the repair shop gives you, plus you may be entitled to a rental, etc. etc.... the benefits keep going...

Yeah, but I already have an accident on my record (braked in the turn as mentioned above) and don't want to risk being dropped.

I already mentioned it was in the rain, believe it or not. I'm already taking blame, so why would I hide anything?

The dealer said $470 for one wheel, but I just bought a rear wheel for $11.61 on ebay. Whoo hoo!

Downshifting into first especially in the rain at higher speeds.

I dont think I have ever done it. Thats what brakes are for, unless you are about to race someone and dont want to start from 2nd at 10mph.

BTW great deal on the rim.

you can definitely lose your tail if you punch it in 2nd gear going ~20mph on a turn (assuming non-ideal surface).......but yeah $6000 actually doesn't sound too steep....and remember that this is an "estimate"...who knows what else is damaged once they tear down the car......paying out of pocket sounds like no fun.
