Default Aftermarket HU and sub

i just bought a 00 s2000 and i love everything about the car except for the sound system . my question is if i put in a aftermarket HU ( don't know which one yet) would the stock controls ( the ones next to the start button) still work with it? second, how good are the speakers? i don't have a lot of money left over so i would just upgrade the HU and install a monochannel amp to a 10" sub that i already have. would that sound decent? i need some input.

thanks

This belongs in the Electronics forum. I'll very briefly answer your questions, though. You need to buy Modifry's DCI in order to ensure that the dash controls work with an aftermarket head unit. Also, you definitely need to upgrade your speakers; upgrading the HU and powering it with an amp will help, but the stock speakers are so bad that a lot more can be gained from upgrading those as well.

It sounds decent but I would save up and buy upgrated door speakers ASAP. It makes a world of a differance. The controls on the left will not work but I am sure some stereo units offer aftermarket modules that will alow you to use the factory switches. I would run a search or ask who ever is installing the unit.

What about just putting in a amp and sub with the stock HU? would a 2004+ HU be better than my 00 HU?

with the amp team up with stock HU you get much louder crappy noise.

the problem with stock HU is they are low wattage system, which is fine for pushing low wattage oem speaker. if you add an amp, it will bump up the wattage but it's not going to improve the quality of the music/noise.

the 2000 HU in my s2k has more bass than 02 radio for some reason, not really a night or day difference but you can tell it's kicking out more bass.

go to the EJ forum, they tried and done almost every combination you can think of, double din in oem mount, dash cut, underseat amp, amp rack, truck sub, floor sub, head rest sub, etc
