I put in the Polk Audio 6.5" with separate tweeters, and an MTX 325 watt amp in the tool bin in the trunk. Kept stock head unit. Sounds beautiful. Someday, I'll get Pinky's Audio Controller and an upgraded head unit, but have to say stock head sounds terrific with this set up. Don't know how much of an improvement in sound I'll get with a new one.

Before actually hearing the stereo on my '01 S2K, I had planned to buy replacement speakers, too, and I had decided on these:

Kenwood eXcelon KFC XR600's

Search the board for speakers and you'll find a few who were really happy with the KFC XR600's. My local stereo shop carried them and would sell them to me for less than Crutchfield.

To be honest, I'm happy enough with the stock speakers on my favorite music (Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood) that it is no longer a priority.

I really should work for these guys, since I advocate them so much, but give Boston Acoustics' RM-series coaxials a shot. They're super-quality speakers, and since they're not component sets, an amplifier isn't really necessary. It'd make them sound better for sure, but you don't have to.

MB Quart is nice and all, but I don't think they come close to BA. They're not balanced well enough. Anyway, here's a link for you:

You may also try the RX series. One step down, but still pretty sweet. http://www.bostonacoustics.com/SeriesPage....?ID=26&SpecID=4

Barry, I'm glad to hear your comment about liking the 2001 speakers.
I, like many others, had already planned to replace my speakers as soon as my car arrived. I had listened to many, and narrowed my search down to just a few, and now, I'm not so sure it is necessary. The stock speakers sound much better than I had expected. Maybe sometime down the road, but for now, these will do.
My 18 yr old son likes them as well, which surprised me.

which is better for the car--diamond audio hex s600s or focal 165k2?

I bought a set of Focal 165K2's off ebay and will let you know how they sound when I get them in the car. I've heard them in the store and they sound incredible. They will definetly need an amp, big amp, as the people I spoke with who use them in competitions say they really like to get around 150 watts per channel. I'm looking for a deal on an amp now. Plan on swapping headunits with Pinky and his set up, and adding a changer in the trunk. One issue several stereo shops mentioned to me was to be careful with amps and subs in the S2000 as the altenator is very small compared to most cars. Supposedly a high powered system could easily overload the alt's abilities to put out juice. Not my area of expertise, but maybe some of the audio guys on this board could give us more info on that.

Am pleased with cerwin-vega 6002 model from Crutchfield - cost about $140 plus $37 for local install (with no problems). The stock speakers were fine but had a hard time hearing them when in motion - new speakers are better (I can hear at 5k rpm) but probably an amp may be necessary if you want to hear clearly at higher rpm.

I ended up with MB Quart mids and tweeters, a Rockford Fosgate Punch 400 amp and a 12w4 JL sub. Stock head unit, and all speakers and amp were free (pulled them from my last car). At some point I'll replace the head unit with an mp3 compatible cd player, but my money is far better spent with performance mods imo.

BTW, I've been very happy with this setup.
