Default alarm and engine kill

so my girlfriend used the key to unlock the door and the stock car alarm went off. forgetting the alarm is on the key chain she satrted the car to try and make it stop. my question is i thought if the alarm was going off you couldnt start the car because of the engine kill mechanism. is this correct or is there something in the key itself? is this normal.

Thanks

Most likely it was the chipped key that allowed it to start.
