A large displacement 4 cyl could have lot's of torque. Torque isn't necessarily dependent on the # of cylinders.
but then again, I never really considered the S2000's engine, either of them, to be "large" displacement engines. Come to think of it though, about the largest 4-cylinder engine I've noticed in the past few year is only 2.5 L. That's not that much bigger in the grand scheme of things. Get much larger on the engine displacement scale and you're usually looking a V6's.

You're right though, change the bore/stoke ratios and definitely change the cam timing and you can have an engine of similar displacement that's a real torque monster, relatively speaking. Of course, it'll probably top out at 80hp @ 4500 rpm but it'll make gobs of low end torque!

Steve R.

Porsche 968.
3.0 liter inline 4, 240hp at 6200rpm, 225 lb-ft at 4100rpm.
104mm bore x 88mm stroke. (F20C = 87x84.)

Anyway, the S2000 is just as fast an any other 2850/240 = 11.875 lbs/hp car out there. (Although it does give up some in the low rpm range - just look at a dyno chart to see how much greater the acceleration is above 6000rpm.)

here's what I tell people,

What's faster between a 1500cc harley davidson or a 1000cc suzuki gxsr? and which one of the two has no low end torque? lol

Same thing, it's just a different type of power, you can rev like a formula one car or sport bike or you can produce low end torque like a turbo diesel. either way it can be fast, it's just how you like to obtain your speed.

so I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you have a problem with the 2000 low torque number, then get something else. I Personally always had high reving cars and 2 strokes, so I'm used to it.

For the record, I've test driven an EVO9 and it doesn't feel all that much faster then the S. Infact it feels a bit slower?

And the shift points (mph) are similar to the AP1.
