I think it's the trunk springs rubbing against each other when the trunk closes. Try wrapping it with something and see if the sound change/lessens. Be sure to wrap a longer length because when the trunk closes the contact point of the two metal bars change.

 

I have this rattle too...Nice post to that link. Would make sense too, since I have no soft top, nor spare.
