Default Another bad S2000 review (long)

Anyone with access to this weeks Dallas Business Journal can read a terrible review of the S2000. To give you an example a quote is "Driving Bland: A jouncy ride, noisy interior and comparatively high price put the Honda S200 gehind it competition in the two-seater sports-car market."

I wrote the writer, Glenn Hunter, and told him what I thought. An excerpt from my e-mail follows.

You start by captioning the photo with "DRIVING BLAND: A jouncy ride, noisy interior and comparatively high price put the Honda S2000 behind its competition in the two-seater sports-car market." I was immediately surprised and confused and wanted to see what the remainder of the article had to say. To counter the caption, this is a sports car and it has the harsh ride and noisy interior as such. We will touch on the price in a minute.

You state that "Honda will make just 5,000 S2000s for U.S. sale this year...", and that is absolutely incorrect. Honda will make and sell well more than 5,000 S2000s for the U.S. this year so I already doubt the amount of research you put into this article. As for the references to the car not being "super-fast" and not being able to "blow away any Corvettes", it will not blow away the newest C5 Corvette, but will put up a hell of a fight and will conquer the older 'Vettes. Remember this is all from a Naturally Aspirated 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine.

The styling is obviously subjective so I can't blame you for not liking it, that is just your opinion.

The price is the final issue I would like to discuss with you. You said the car has a comparatively high price and is $6,500 more than the Miata and nearly $9,000 more than the MR2 Spyder. I think the problem is you are not looking at the S2000s competition. Those cars are not near the same league as the S2000. The competition is normally considered to be the Porsche Boxster S and the BMW M Roadster which are both priced well over $10,000 more than the S2000.

In short, the S2000 is a harsh riding, loud, purpose built sports car that definitely wasn't made for the masses like the Miata or MR2 Spyder; but definitely wins the "bang for the buck" prize when put up against its true competition.

Sorry for the long post.

That is a well worded response. Defintely calmer and more civilized than what I would have said to a garbage review like that.

Reviews like that piss me off big time!!!!

These people know nothing about true sports cars.

For a handmade car like S2000... 32k is a bargain.

sometimes folks here get worked up when reviewers say anything negative about the s2000, even if it is a reasonable comment. This is not one of those cases. This guy is a moron! Bland? what a dumb comment...

It does no good to send comments to the reporter himself. You're much better off sending them to the editor, managing editor and the reporter's departmental editor (e.g., business editor). And while you're at it, send one to the advertising manager, too, pointing out that while you're certainly in favor of free speech, you absolutely cannot accept the fact that stories such as this one are running based on incorrect information and a reporter's lack of knowledge of his or her beat; also mention that you're going to send copies of your letters to the general managers at all the Honda dealerships in your area.

If you can be specific about real inaccuracies (not just opinions) that appear in newspaper stories, you'll be amazed at how far you can make the newspaper's management staff bend over.

That's pretty funny -- first the guy complains that the car won't beat a Corvette, then he complains that it costs more than a Miata!?! Make up your mind, buddy! If he wants something as cheap as a Miata that'll blow away a Vette, he's gonna have to look for something on two wheels, not four... Short of that, the S2K's the only thing to come close!

Or, he can buy a used miata, really cheap, mod the hell out of it (small block V8) and then he'll beat a C5.

They used to call those "Monster Miatas" didn't they? Imagine being at a stoplight and hearing the rumble of a big V8 from the car pulling up next to you, then turning and seeing -- a Miata!?!
