Keep in mind that buying the beater will:
1> increase insurance
2> add more maintenance costs (2 cars to maintain)
I'd vote to fix up the S2000. But if you really need a car with space for those 'just in case' times, then my vote swings to buy a beater.

Do you see people in a convertible Chevy Cavalier get a daily beater? Nope.
Guess what the daily beater was? A non-convertible Cavalier.
I think the only way I would get a second car is if it was an automatic sedan...something that would really provide something the S2000 doesn't. I don't hit major traffic right now with my work and/or school commute though, so I'd probably still drive the S2000 most days

You bought the S to drive it, don't get a beater. Spend ~$1k to fix up your car and save the rest.
If it takes $5k to clean up dents and dings you'd be better off selling the thing and getting a different one than dropping $5k into.
If you put $5k in this car and someone totaled it while it was parked on the street the next day, you're out $5k.
And stop parking next to other people. Walking is good for you.

I have no desire to ever own a sedan. I hate the damn things.

There are simply way more things "fun" to take a sedan or 4x4 truck to that the S2000 cannot do.
1. The S2000 cannot transport 4 adults and a driver to events, clubs, bars, etc.
2. The S2000 cannot drive on soft beach sand, or in the mud by the river.
3. The S2000 cannot carry a motorcycle in the trunk!
The S2000 is good for what it was designed for. Those who defend it as being a versatile daily driver are sadly mistaken.
Do you only have one pair of clothes? In a similar way you need more than one vehicle to cover all types of vehicular fun aside from boring commutes.
