Any mountain bikers in here?
Okay... so the weather is warming up and, while driving top down is a lot of fun, it just doesn't replace the feeling of tearing down a singletrack trail on a beautiful day.
The problem: My S2k is my only car and there doesn't seem to be a way to get a bike around with it. I'm not a fan of the trunk-mounted carriers (like the Saris Bones) because I don't want scratches on my trunklid (and Honda specifically warns not to use one).... and I'm not too thrilled about the idea of mounting a trailer hitch on a roadster.
So I was thinking of alternatives and came up with this... please correct me if I'm way off here...
Anyone think it would be possible to modify a hitch mount bike rack so that it attaches to the rear of the car by the tow-hook bolt?
I mean that little eye bolt that you screw into the bumper after removing the plastic cover.
What if you got a rack like this:

.... and welded the tow hook to the base of the rack. Then you'd just screw in the base, attach the rack, mount your bike, and off you go! You can see how the two parts of the rack are separate in Step 1 here: http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/instructio...5336_02,948.pdf
I'm thinking that a bike (~24lbs) and carrier (~15lbs???) would be well within the weight-bearing capacity of the tow hook.

I like to Mt. Bike. Fortunatly for me I have a truck to haul my gear around. I do have some experience with various car mounted bike carriers.
I would caution you against mounting a bike rack to the tow-hook point. The manual also specifically suggests you pull it out straight by the tow-hook as offset pressure can damage the car. I doubt it will support your bike.
Best bet is to make friends with a fellow biker who has a truck.

I love to Mnt Bike! Actually, I use to race for the University of Alabama. I graduated and took a break for a couple of years. That's when I got the S2000. I couldn't handle not having a way to go ride whenever I wanted to, so I found a little 1986 Isuzu pickup for $500. It allows me to do all the Mnt Biking that I want, plus use it around the house for pinestraw, bark, plants, etc....
My vote is to not get the S2000 seats all sweaty, and buy you an old used truck.
