ive driven a handful of s2000's... i like the ap1, higher redline, it "feels" faster because of its response... i personally hate the clutch delay valve in the ap2, its annoying as hell... ap1 to me was just way more fun to drive....

I love these threads.... not! AP4 FTW!
If you don't like them, you shouldn't read them. Anyone who really hates them would have avoided clicking on the link and reading the posts in the first place, but SOMETHING drew you here. What was it? Did you just drop by to try to make the people who are enjoying the thread feel stupid? If so, you failed, because it's your comment that looks out of place.

Lean not to read threads that you hate and you'll probably be a lot happier when you visit S2kI.

OK, now I have to stick up for the AP2's.

Do you really mean to say that the AP1 was a "LOT" more fun to drive? I'm not even sure I could say that one is any more fun than the other; Just that they're different in ways that matter more to some than to others. LOL, maybe the differences matter more to YOU than they do to ME. ???

Seriously, the first AP1's have handling that matches my autocrossing habits perfectly, and that does make the car fun, but the AP2's added stability makes them fun too. A GT3 will plow like a pig and oversteer like crazy, whatever the driver wants it NOT to do, until the driver adjusts his style to its handling, and then all of a sudden it's stuck like glue and faster than stink. That's fun too, but to rank one above the other in terms of how much fun they are is something I just can't do. Nothing is more fun than ripping up an autocross course in an Elise or an all out Miata autocross car, but that doesn't mean that other cars with lesser capabilities aren't just as much fun. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I have as much fun when I autocross my wife's Benz as I do autocrossing the S2000. It's a real kick in the butt taking the F Stock trophy away from the Camaro boys (which I can do, as long as Gerry Grigg doesn't show up).

I think people run into problems when they try to drive an AP2 like an AP1, they require different techniques, and I'm not so sure the CDV is the annoying part of the AP2 trans, I think the PP is.

My question of the moment - how would an AP2 ride on the AP1 16" wheels and tires? Better turn in? More overtseer? Do we know anybody who's run AP1 wheels on an AP2? Vice Versa? That alone I'd bet would change the handling noticably.
I don't know for sure, but I'd think the tires would make a pretty big difference. Maybe some of the guys who have put AP2 wheels and tires on their AP1 could comment.

Has anyone autocrossed or tracked an AP1 on AP2 wheels and OEM AP2 tires?

I'd expect the lower profile tires to have a quicker response, but construction, and paricularly the sidewall construction and compound, is such a big factor that there is no way to be sure (at least not without more information than I have available).

Roll understeer actually produces an increase in total grip (according to Carol Smith, not according to tests I've run myself ), which is probably one reason that the larger contact patches on the AP2 don't produce proportionaly greater grip (but it could also be a difference in tire construction and/or compound).

It might be interesting to swap wheels and tires with somebody driving an AP2 at one of the autocrosses, but with my car being modded my results wouldn't mean much to anyone else.

I've got an AP1 with the 4.57 gears. Fixes everything always being in or close to VTEC.

Hey, you still have your seat-o-pants meter Even if your car is modded, you can still check for a difference in feel - it would be interesting to know.

I have a feeling this thread is going to turn irrelevant pretty quickly though, the APx fanbois seem to be catching on.

The difference is that the AP2 suspension changes were in response to average American drivers complaining about the tricky handling characteristics of the AP1. Not F1 drivers...average American drivers.

The results definitely made the car easier to handle for those of us who do not have the last name of Schumacher.

But, in each of these discussions, I remind folks that the quickest s2k at every autox National Championship in which both cars have run has been an AP1. While the AP2 is faster for most of us...the best drivers seem to get more out of the AP1.
when did i ever say F1 drivers was driving the s2000 and oversteering into runoff areas or a redwood tree? the F1 analogy came from changes to F1 cars every year to make the new car better than the last from every standpoint. the AP1 was the Ferrari F2006 and the AP2 is the F2007.

i remember during my solo2 days back in 2000-2001 there were tons of AP1 because it was the hot new car and it could be the reason why there are faster AP1 on the national circuit vs the AP2. the AP1 owners were the die hard autox and the AP2 never got that chance.

Perfect for me would be an AP2 that revved to 11k - I love the F1 sound.
lol
you know F1 car rev up to 22k RPM.

So my dream is in the future find a F1 engine and swap it into the car.
Hey it only V8 2.0 Liters that rev to 22k RPM. that will fit no problem. hahaha
