It's AutoX, not a racetrack.

of course you also have to figure in that there are ALOT more ap1s than ap2s.
That also means more seat time and more track records for ap1s.
records surface.

Not everyone wants to take their new ap2 and go trash it on the 1/4 or autox. Maybe now that ap2s have some years on them we'll see some more track records

I don't want to take sides even though the AP1 seems faster, but if those are autox numbers, then it's based on drivers most likely.
So if anything, this shows that the performance of the 2 cars are so close that as Willie Gee correctly points out: it's a drivers race. Both in 1/4 mile and handling.
Were there improvements for the AP2...absolutely: It's easier for most people to drive fast safely; it has better tire selection; it has strengthened components that were shown to break on the AP1; more tractable engine for daily driving. And it has some drawbacks: CDV; slower steering (not that I've ever noticed that personally); shorter legs in lower gears; softer rear springs (a necessary compromise for making the car easier to drive).
To each his own...but AP2 fanbois have nothing to look down on when they see an AP1 from a performance perspective.
Well my S is faster than yours, nut uh! is too, nut uh! that's what this sounds like, get what you like! , either way AP1 or 2 you will like because it is a S. But the AP1 is better, an fast just like a marsupial

Kerosene lanterns; and you have to use your hands for turn signals...
j/k. Yes all S2000's have HID's' even the "vintage" ones.

Average is just that...average. We are talking about which has the most potential. And I absolutely agree that for most people the AP2 is easier to drive fast (just as a car with VSA is easier to drive fast than one without)...but that does not mean it is an improvement in performance.
All the numbers come from scca.org solo results archives.

You can't take two single autox races and and say anthing usefull about the difference between the AP1 and the AP2. You need to look at a couple hundred races and do the average. This will clearly tell you that the AP1 and AP2 are the Same Damn Car. But if you want to prove one is a hair better than another do the math. Should take about an hour to get useful numbers.
All that the TWO posted results tell you is that the very best AP1 driver is slightly better than the very best AP2 driver on that day. Useless trivia, given the question.
