i've always wondered this about dyno + gears.

so i have 4.77 gears. i should have the same hp
but.... what if i entered the same oem gears spec into the dyno as a stock ap2... and then get on the dyno, wouldn't the result tell me how much diff in power it is sending to the wheels?

am i making sense? how is my logic flawed? please explain
Logic is flawed. Power is the same. But at 20mph, you're putting down more ponies with the 4.77s because you're at higher rpms. You don't need a dyno, you need the TurnZero gear calculator.

What I think is most interesting is that the cars made more power with the airbox off, since I always hear how taking it off DECREASES power. I guess the conventional wisdom is incorrect on that one, since both your cars showed clear increases in power in an objective test.

Yeah we put the air box lids on again. (i own the ap1 that was dyno"d)
Was happy with results on my ap1 hitting 200rwhp.
Got to admit vtec did sound pretty loud with the lid off.

Thanks for the replies on the box cover, I forgot about the heat issue. You'd be sucking nothing but post-radiator air, so it makes sense that in the real world it wouldn't work so well.

Power, calculated from a engine (HP/KWtt) = function of RPM and Torque (made BY the engine @ that RPM), meaning the gears have no effect on HP.

On the contrary, you might lose HP due to the frictional losses which increase with more gearing...

The reason why you go "faster" is simply because you get into your powerband much sooner allowing you to stay in the sweet spot when youre racing - this is why after a certain speed gears will do nothing for you in a race, and on a road race course it might hinder you since you might have to make that extra shift.
