i've always wondered this about dyno + gears.
so i have 4.77 gears. i should have the same hp
but.... what if i entered the same oem gears spec into the dyno as a stock ap2... and then get on the dyno, wouldn't the result tell me how much diff in power it is sending to the wheels?
am i making sense? how is my logic flawed? please explain

What I think is most interesting is that the cars made more power with the airbox off, since I always hear how taking it off DECREASES power. I guess the conventional wisdom is incorrect on that one, since both your cars showed clear increases in power in an objective test.

On the contrary, you might lose HP due to the frictional losses which increase with more gearing...
The reason why you go "faster" is simply because you get into your powerband much sooner allowing you to stay in the sweet spot when youre racing - this is why after a certain speed gears will do nothing for you in a race, and on a road race course it might hinder you since you might have to make that extra shift.
