Attn: Rick Hesel and other leather experts
I installed Rick's console cover last weekend, and was totally satisfied with the results. The instructions were exactly right, the work was easy even for somebody of my modest ability, and the thing just looks great. In fact, it looks like a factory option -- there's nothing aftermarket about it.
Then I cleaned up the rest of the interior, and re-examined the leather-vinyl question. I carefully stretched and prodded various panels to decide what they are, and decided there's more leather on the seats than I had thought. In fact, it looks like everything on the seats is leather except the back panels and strap.
Rick and others: am I dreaming here? This is better than I assumed.

I've been wondering about this too Tox. It was my assumption that the parts of the interior that were leather were perforated. I'm hoping that I was wrong - any others out there with the real skinny on this.
I was contemplating some interior modifications and took my car to a local automotive upholsterer. According to him, every part of the seat that you come into contact with while seated is leather. the sides of the "seat" are vinyl as well as the back of the seat "back". The perforated armrest on the center console is leather as well. I'm unsure about the door panels though.
