some people say that an ap1 with 4.44 gears is like an ap2. does that mean a ap2 with 4.57 gears will not benefit like an ap1 would? what is the best all around gear to get for ap2?

thankx

Ricks told me that they should have the group buy on these at the end of this month. Yes there is a $1K refundable core charge if you buy them through Ricks.

thought i would link this for those interested in gear mods for our big brother, the NSX.

http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Performance/gears.htm

bottomline, theirs are much more expensive than ours, but they love it.

Hold on there, big fella! Not just any mechanic. ONLY a mechanic who is experienced in doing rear differential ring and pinion gears. If you get just "any" mechanic to do this, this could turn out to be your WORST nightmare and make you wish you have never heard of "gears".

A slight ammendment, if you will. This core charge is only if you elect to buy a set of gears that has been installed into an existing pumpkin. They send you the whole pumpkin with gears inside and you send them your pumpkin with your old gears inside. If you simple buy the gears, there is no core charge. If you send your own rear diff to Rick's to have Ganley put in the gears, there is no core charge, but installation fees and shipping charges apply.
(Now, I'm pretty sure this is the way it is. If I'm wrong, please slap me silly with a wet noodle. )

an ap2 is like an ap1 with 4.27 gears. if you ignore the heavier wheels and the lowered redline.

otherwise, i would think that between a 4.57 ap1 and 4.57 ap2 the difference would be negligible. just like the stock car's differences are negligible. however, due to the lowered redline on the ap2 you may find yourself having to shift much sooner than you'd prefer.

use the gear calculator to figure it out.

ricks is the only place to get 4.57's. if you buy the gears but don't want to send your diff to rick's to get it installed, be certain you find a mechanic who is good at doing RWD gear installs. doing gears on an S2000 is an art more so than a technical experience. there are things the installer MUST know before installing the gears. (for example. to use all the OEM specs in the helm manual for a gear install, EXCEPT the backlash settings. the backlash should be set to .006)

otherwise you can do the $1000 core exchange where they send you a diff so you can get just the diff installed by any decent mechanic or honda dealer. then when you send your diff back they refund that $1000
