Auto Show Garbage
I agree in general, lots of the stuff showing up at the shows is out there, and I mean way out there. Keep in mind though that is partly the role of the concept car, to gauge the public reaction. The other key role I see concept cars play is the ability to let the design team run wild. I work in a creative environment, and one of the best ways to come up with some really boring lame ideas is to set too many parameters at the beginning of a job, this just kills the creativity.
Many concepts are developed with a very open set of parameters, the creative ideas flow and they are not held back by practical evaluations. Although some of these concepts may show up looking wacky, they may embody some really great innovative thinking that will someday lead to incredible innovations in a production vehicle.
So although we sometimes get ugly, wacky, impractical, whatever, it is the process that counts often. It is the opportunity to work through new ideas and propose solutions that are new. And believe me, as a creative individual, I have been involved in projects that were a blast to work on, and the end result seemed outstanding. Then a week later, stepping back and looking at it again, the team has asked, "what in the hell were we thinking?"
And now, I

I hope Honda isn't stupid enough to ever ship that ugly concept called "The Element". Opps, too late!
Well, maybe Nissan won't ship that ugly 350Z thingy. Opps, too late again!
I guess American car companies don't have a monopoly on FUGLY!

WOW Triple-H, good point. HUGE difference between the Titan concept (LEGOS) and the production truck. Still, I see production Caddy's on the road now that are hideous. Of course, that's one mans opinion.
