Since the RX8 is NOT a sports car, the automatic verson was needed. The only way Mazda could fool Ford management into letting them make another car with a rotary was to add grocery getter practicality to it. Mazda can't afford to build a car with as concentrated of a market as the S2000. Honda didn't HAVE to make the S2000. They HAVE to make cars like the Accord. The S2000 was made as a statement that Honda can still make sports cars, and to showcase the engineering marvels that would have gone to waste. It's not a bread and butter car, so to speak. They weren't looking to make a fortune out of it and they knew that they could make a car without turning much of a profit. It brings people into the showroom, and puts the rest of the Honda lineup on the map more.
Mazda can't afford to do it, Nissan can't afford to do it, GM is an American company...so they wont do it, and Toyota is too busy making trucks and cars that put you to sleep.
It's nice having a car that stands out. Manual gearboxes are almost becoming rare now a days. It's a shame. It's also funny how cars are coming with more electronic aids than the space shuttle lately as well. WTF happened to HUMANS driving cars? I notice that these electronic aids are available to mask the lack of talent of the car itself. Want a 3500lb car with 70/30 weight distribution and a Mcpherson strut front suspension handle well? Put a bunch of electronic shit on it. Substance is being replaced by piss and vinegar.
Oh well.
SMG or dual clutch boxes suck, IMO. I haven't driven a DSG car, but the SMG E46 M3 that I drove SUCKED!! I hated it for many reasons.
