is it bad to start in 2nd gear instead of 1st?
I do it all the time on my Jeep & truck. Both have enough low-end torque that they start out easily in second. A second gear start will increase clutch wear, but decrease 2nd gear syncro wear. I started the (bad) habit when I had a Jeep with toasted syncros that would not make the 1->2 shift when the temps were below 0F. I'd have to either start out in 2nd or try to shift 1->3. I still do it about 1/2 the time - mostly out of habit & lazyness.
I don't think I like doing it on my s2K though. Not enough torque, so too many revs are needed, & seems like too much clutch wear.
BTW - the Jeep has 140K miles on the original clutch.

i personally wouldnt do it. mostly cause it doesnt really do anythign for you. there's really no purpose to. however if you had a major reason, like a syncro was out or something of that nature then i'd do it cause i have to. but otherwise, naw i'll stick with standard procedure

Whats the point? Even if on ice/snow, 1st gear shouldnt be a problem for the S2.
Simply you will probably do lots of harm to your drivetrain if you start in 2nd on the S. There is not enuf torque to get you going. You will put more wear on your clutch.
I had a 86 Jetta VR6 and the car was so light and there was alot of torque, i could pull off the line in 2nd no problems. Wouldnt wanna try on my S....
