Default Beating the rear window tint topic to death

...and because we have not discussed this one enough, I am going to take it out and beat it death again.

I know some of you have gotten the rear window tinted, either through a custom cut piece of static-cling type film, or have gone to home depot or lowes or some other place and bought static-cling window film and did it yourself. My question is for those who did buy it at a hardware store, which brand did you get?

I went to home depot today and found some static-cling film for home and all purpose use (including cars). It came in either "smoke" or "bronze". The smoke one looked like it had a slight bluish tint to it. It came in only one size, 3x6.5 and cost $12.75. It came in a long skinny box, orange/yellow/white in color. I believe the brand was "Gild" or something that sounds like that. I want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff. Other than home depot, I don't know where else to go to find this sort of thing.

OH, and one more thing, for those who have found success with the static stuff, have you also tried using the static stuff on the regular door windows?

I had my side windows tinted at a shop, and thought about going the static tint route for the back window. I saw it at a Wal-Mart supercenter, but have been too nervous to try it.

well, at least its static, meaning you can take it on and off. So if you mess up, there's no harm done.

I just want to make sure I'm buying the right product so I don't waste time and money.

I have phoned around to all local tinting shops, and I have been told the back window can not be done at all. The material will not work period. I know this is not the case, as others have done it. I can not convince them to try it I am not adventoursome to do it myself. Bummer

Yes Redleader, that is what I have been using. I have had one of my tint guys pre-cut some of each and have them over on the group buy forum. I have included some EZ install tips that will allow anyone to do a professionally looking job at,

mr. speed2000, are you selling the precut pieces, and if so, how much and how may I order one?

If the precut piece plus applicable tax and shipping is more than the cost of a roll, I will have to buy it here and attempt to cut if myself.

I also want to try using it on the side windows. is that possible?

I have one of the pre-cut ones Speed2000 speaks of, and I just pulled it out and looked at it today. It fits perfect, and doesnt require anyone else on 'install'. You put it on and it just clings to the plastic window, pretty cool. So I guess I need to get my windows tinited on Monday now. Ill take pics and post.

Hi guys. As a window tinter with quite a few years of experience, let me offer you a couple of suggestions about the back window:
1. Most tint shops wisely avoid having anything to do with plastic windows since they scratch easily and if you remove and replace the static film many times it tends to grind the dust into the window which makes for an angry customer in a only a matter of time.
2. Some of my customers in the past have insisted on a solution and one of my installers came up with using a piece of plexiglass and cutting it in the same pattern as the window but just a little bigger in the corners and then attaching it to the top with velcro. The plexiglass can be tinted with whatever shade you desire or that is legal but if it is some of the cheaper grades it doesn

Yeah, absolutely agree with ceworkman. I would strongly advise against this. I have had experience with plastic windows on another vehicle and I can tell you that not only is there scratching but there is also some kind of chemical interaction which takes place between the tint and the window plastic causing the original plastic window to gradualy become opaque

Try this at your own peril!!
