I just bought an A'PEXi N-1 single outlet (not available in the US apparently). I hear it's loud as hell but haven't put it on the car yet. I think Tuesday will be the day for that.
It's single outlet, right side exit. It looks like it will be loud; fairly straight piping, small canister diameter. Weight seems to be around 12-15 pounds total (arm scale guess) so it's a considerable savings over the stock deal.
I'll be able to report on it during the week but I have nothing to record sound with other than my laptop so that might not work out too well.
how come no one is talking about the spoon exhaust? seems like everyone is into the amuse or hks or mugen or neuspeed exhausts. i'm personally contemplating between the mugen ti or the spoon. i thought i saw a spoon dual exhaust but i'm not sure. can anyone verify this?
Not to be too anal, but whenever I have a question that isn't entirely dependent on time, I'll use the search feature and end up usually having to set aside 20 minutes to read all the informative responses. You would probably need more time than that to read all the previous information posted on "exhaust" but having said that, if you like an aggressive look with a sound that at VTEC, is about as close to a Formula 1 vibe as you're going to get for under $250,000, the Tanabe Racing Medalion may suit you. I spent two months going over 20 assorted wav files on varying cat-backs for the S2K and while I really was looking forward to a titanium single outlet offering, the Amuse system ended up being 125db's or so (measured) which is just ridiculously loud...think F-18 at takeoff loud! I saw some private owner dyno sheets on the Tanabe and was very impressed so I bought it for a great price ($525...it's usually about $650-700). The stainless steel canisters look very aggressive from any angle and yes, they exit the rear fascia at an offset angle...this is normal. You may get the occasional "ricer" comment from naysayers but that's usually nulified when they hear the car at VTEC. It's a system that at idle, sounds stock, but as soon as the pedal is depressed, you'll know you've got something other than OEM under the car. It is loud at WOT, make no mistake about it, but loud in a good way if you know what I mean. This is NOT the system for those who want to be stealth. It won't get you a ticket like the Amuse (I mean, 125db's is just insane) nor will you be asked to leave the track, but it is there. The system was weighed by me on a digital scale and came in 13.3-lbs under the OEM's measured weight of 52-lbs. Now...for the good stuff. At 8200 RPM's, the Tanabe RM gained 9.5hp over stock without the silencers on. With the silencers on, it had no significant increase up top bu actually gained 2.6hp down low...go figure. My silencers make cool bookends if you know what I mean. I plan on going home to Maine soon and it's a 8-hr one way trip and I STILL won't put 'em on, but with an ordered vanity plate that is going to read "BABY F1" you can understand aggressive sounding cat-backs are my friends, besides, my last car was a 385hp Camaro SS with a Borla and compared to that demonic note, my Tanabe is docile in and around the city. FWIW, the Tanabe is powder coated from the canisters forward while their latest Super Medalion is stainless steel throughout. I also favored it because it retained the dual outlets which to me, always helps in keeping with that aggressive look. Not for everyone, but a DEFINITE improvement in performance at least as good as anything else I've seen and in many cases, better. I've tested my car with an accelerometer and following the Tanabe install, my 1/4-mile time was reduced, on average, by .23 seconds which is about 2 car lengths at that distance.
I installed spoon on my s2000 about 7 months ago. I love the sound of it but it is bit loud with top up. here are few pointers.
- After installation, Back-end feels much lighter.
- It has changed sound since I've got it first time. now it has more deeper sound.
- it produces sweet sound after 6000 rpm.
- Silencer did not reduce sound as much as i expected.
- when load on engine is minimal, exhaust sound is minimal as well.
- I kinda miss dual exhaust look but once I'm in the car, it doesn't matter.
- if you don't want to wake up your neighbor, don't get it. - I think I might have but no complaints yet.
I have the HKS installed. I got it at the same time as the DC Header and the Injen Intake so I don't know which sounds are associated with which piece of equipment but the whole package together sounds sweet and gave me a nice improvement in power and response. I raced a local guy with a 2001 that is bone stock... before the mods we were about even, I pulled from him slightly. After the mods I REALLY pulled away from him as soon as I shifted into second. Sounds good, looks good, works good. There aren't really any "bad" exhausts out there from the bigger names it's mostly a matter of personal preference. Ride safe!
