4.44's give you a reduction of about 8.3%.
4.57's about 11.5%.
4.77's about 16.3%.
This gives you a corresponding "feeling" of adding that much more power and torque but also the same corresponding increase in rpm at any given road speed in any given gear. (BTW, your speedometer will be out by this % too, but then, that's what the "Yellow Box" is for.)
There is also a popular "misconception" that a "geared" car will have a lower top speed. Since the stock geared car cannot redline in 6th and is restricted to about 150 mph (by drag), a 4.44 car would STILL be able to go 150 mph, as would a 4.57 car. The only one that would suffer a slight decrease in top end would be the 4.77 car because it is the one that will actually be able to redline 6th gear and this would put it at 147 mph - a WHOPPING big 3 mph slower. So, can we please put this idea to rest?

So the bigger the number the faster you have to shift? But would 4.44 - 4.77 be that much of a big difference? What do the numbers represent? And in what?

slighly off topic, this is probably direct to xviper and whoever installed their own gears....

If I changed the clutch on my friends RSX...

(taking off subframe, holding up the motor, pulling the tranny out, etc...)

Will I be able to install 4.77's myself???

Not to steal the thread but to enlighten my very small knowledge of mechanics......If I was to install 4.77 gears it would increase my low/mid range torque/power but will lower my top end.

Now with that said. Even though it does lower your topend. Getting to your topend would be much faster. Correct?

Also, how much will it lower your topend. 166 is max. Would it make it like 140 or 150 tops?

Last question. I drive about 80 miles a day to work and back. All freeway. Currently at 80mph I run about 4200 to 4300 rpm's. What could I expect with the 4.57 gears if the 4.77 run at 5300 rpms?

Thanks.

Just did some good reading. Gears are going to be my first mod! Wooo!! Just have to decide which ones best for me..I'm more of a fast short sprint person not to much into top speed. So if getting gears make me "feel" like i have more tq then thats the way I'm going! I want some "neck snappin" drives Thanks for your evaluation and impressions xviper
