Bird Sh!t
Yes, bird shit can damage clear coat if left to sit on the finish too long. And, the damage can get beyond repair with time. The BS is highly acidic, and it roughens and eventually removes the clear coat on the spot where it is. If you get it off quick, there will be no damage. If you let it sit on a bit longer, it will create a rough spot in the clear coat that will have to be polished out. If left even longer, it will create a spot of missing clear coat, which can be repaired only by a repaint of the damaged pannel. How long does it take to do real damage? I don't know. That's why I get it off as soon as I see it.
It sure is! And remember, your top is plastic, and so is clear coat. So it is possible that BS could eat into the finish of your top, just like it can eat into the clear coat. So the stuff needs to be removed from the top ASAP.
Seagull dropped a load while I was at the coast.
Fortunately it landed on the boot so it was easy to mop up. Speaking of burritos, they too will hurt the clearcoat. Accidently spilled some burrito juice on my old Nissan once and didn't wipe it off for a couple of weeks. It too off some of the clear coat...

not bird poo, but I was driving some country roads just before dawn one day, and a HUGE moth hit my driver's side mirror. The moth pretty much exploded and sent bug guts all over my face and seat. I almost lost control when the guts hit me in the face.
