Is it just the gearing? Becasue that can always be changed right?
Yes, this is primarily it. It's like driving a stock AP1 but not being allowed to go to 9000 rpm. And yes, you could compensate to some extent with "gears".

Whats the typical repair cost in these situations?

Best and worst case? Just curious . . .

Anyways be careful next time around and hope it works out.

You could always take your chances at a dealer. Does this occasionally get covered? I'm about to buy a slightly used 2004 and I'm wanting to take it to the dealer for inspection first. I want to make sure it wasn't overreved a few days before I bought it or something, lol.

ok one the gears int he tranny are not realy "geared" much different..... 80% of the gearing of a rwd car is in the rear end. and 2 the bottom end can take the 9k rev in the 2.2 the rods are made the same as the 2.0 and uses all of the same hardware aswell. you jsut need to do some springs in the top end..... then your all set.

I think you got that backwards. The heads are the same(except for the sparc plug cover). The piston speeds are different at XXXX rpms.

You have some weird misconceptions about how this car is put together and cars in general. Jasonw has already pointed out your incorrect information about the bottom end, so I won't say any more about this.
The '04 and newer tranny is "geared" significantly different. It has a different secondary reduction gear ratio which makes the drivetrain perform "similar" to an AP1 with 4.44s in the rear diff. In order to maintain a similar highway cruising performance, 5th and 6th gear ratios were altered to offset what the new reduction gear does to the tranny. And this "80% of the gearing being in the rear of a RWD car"? This is one of the strangest statements to come along in a long time.
You are setting Kayvan up for tremendous disappointment if he took for gospel what you just advised him and very possibly in for a world of hurt. Hasn't he had enough?

Kay's - Get a quote on repair. Compare to a Hardtopguy 2.2L and make your decision.

With the 2.2 you are pushing it's limit a bit more so I would avoid frequently using the last 700rpm but wouldn't be too concerned.

Don't bother with the J's. Half the money you'll spend will be for the name, freight and dealer markup.

Aus, it's "kayvan's" car, not Kay's.

KAY's is doing an F22C swap too. And planning to run with the F20C ECU...
