Bought a 2005 S and then... returned it
So, here's the details.
I bought the car on a Sunday and had them put in the "Due Bill"
-Must pass compression and leak down test or the contract is void.
So, I took it in to the dealer today (a Mitsubishi dealer) and compression numbers were 230, 160, 240, 170. I told them to take the car back and void the contract.
So, they tried to get me to keep the car and were willing the fix the car free of charge and give me a 100% comprehensive Honda extended warranty.
I denied the offer. Did I do the right thing? I know the car is accident free - had all of the VIN tags in place and. I had it put on a lift and inspected it thoroughly.

If you're satisfied you did the right thing what does it matter what random internet folk think?
Personally I would be sketched out by random compression numbers like that and would have avoided it like the plague. Was the car purchased at a Honda dealership for them to offer to pay for repairs and the warranty? I do a similar thing with all car purchases I have made and have my personal mechanic that I am good friends with look over the vehicle before I give a thumbs up on it.

It was bought at a Mitsubishi dealership and the compression test done there as well. They contacted Honda about the warranty and the repairs. It would have been a 100% covered Honda warranty.
Also, as far as the compression testing, I got to go into the Mitsu garage and watch the tech set it all up and run the numbers one by one.
It was done honestly and right. I got to read the actual numbers on the pressure guage after each cylinder was tested.
In anycase, yeah, it doesn't matter what the internet folk think. I'm just wondering what everyone else would have done. I walked away from it. I'm planning on tracking and driving this thing hard at least 10-12x a year, I want it to be reliable, no questions.
All in all, I lost nothing, they paid for everything. The only part where I lost money was getting it aligned with my own guy yesterday, ah well, not a big deal.

I would NOT have bought it. sounds...extremely sketchy. I hate how its every other cylinder. If it was two cylinders between each other, I would've said head gasket and possible repair, but from the sounds of it, it sounds like its been overrevved and its either got stretched valves, or it was oil-starved and its got mean scored cylinders..
If the engine was totally fscked, would they have given you a new one? IF that was the case, I -might- have considered it

Unless they were going to rebuild or replace the engine, I'd pass.
If you got it in writing that they would rebuild or replace it, I would have kept it. Especially if you're going to track it. Essentially a new engine.

You did the right thing. Only thing I would have done differently is asked for a compression test before I bought the car. I walked away from a dealership S2000 because they wouldn't allow a compression test to be performed on the car.
