Thanks for the quick response - the car is at the shop waiting for parts to come in for an install tomorrow. Left a message with service to call me back with a break down of price on parts and labor. You think I can lower the price at a dealership service dept.?

Feel like i'm in between a rock and a hard place, car sounds like its being tortured, will it make it to another shop? Don't have a lot of time and money to shop around...

Said I needed a new clutch and drive belt soon too (still on my first with both)...

Second worst thing after getting old? When your car gets old :-(

I would tell the dealer to put it back together and get the parts online. Brakes are easy to do yourself. If you don't have a lot of money- don't spend it foolishly on overpriced dealer service. As others have shown you, you can pay 1/2 or less what they are quoting you. You can't do any more damage than what already is there as you are replacing pads/rotors anyway. Another option would be to try an independant shop. There must be a Japanese or even Honda specialist around your area who would do the job for much less.

Thx - you guys saved me $200

Still no great deal but this is what i got from the dealer after telling him i shopped around:

$806 for front and rear

$480 for labor (!)

But then the service guy who i was finagling with said i might as well use there coupon on brakes yada yada yada - so i'm getting it done with taxes (chicago's at 10%), parts, labor for $1202.75

ugh, i feel sick...

i would too if i were you.

i'm sure if you posted up in your local forum, there would be someone willing to help for much less than $480...

I wish I had the time/energy/space/skill to do the job myself...there are independent shops close by but after being stung by one just recently, i 'm a bit fed up (if you can't tell).

My clutch isn't slipping, but i'm pretty tough on my clutches...this one, surprisingly, has lasted me 70k though so i wouldn't be too surprised if the time for replacement is near...

But, what would be a fair labor cost for a brake job like this? - like i posted earlier - i got it at $480.

I would estimate 2-3 hours labor at $80 per hour through an independant shop. I would expect that to include a flush and fill of the brake fluid as well as the pads and rotors. The whole job with parts, less than $600.

So they say $480 for labor.

Ask them what their hourly labor cost is. Couldn't be more than $100.

Sit there and watch them get it done in an hour, or two if they are sitting around and being super lazy.

$480 is ridiculous. If you pay that, you might as well walk in without pants and lube up beforehand.

You could fly in a mechanic from across the country, pair him a fair hourly rate to have it done for that price.

It's simply preposterous.

if you know how to do it your self or any tech could do the work in a half hour tops, if they are trying to go quick like bunny.

i think that the labor should be about 1.5 hours for both, but idk what it is exactly.

don't get your brakes done at a dealer, this is one thing that really any monkey with a wrench can do.

even if you hire to do the work, it should be about $600 to $900 if you get after market oe instead if honda brand.
