Default Buying a 2004 S2000 ! Some questions

Hey guys,
I found a clean well maintained 04 S2000 AP2 with 59k miles, I got some questions about the car.
Is there any known issues with the S2000 model year 2004 that i need to know about? Do they burn oil?
Does the model year 2004 have Drive by wire and Traction control? or is it same as the 2005? Should I go with 2005 instead of 2004? Not sure why many say that the 2005 S2000 was the best S2k to buy

If you guys got anything to add please let me know.

Thanks

All MOST S2000s burn oil, so check it often, no traction control and no drive by wire. 04 and 05 are virtually the same. As far as issues, I'll let the 04/05 owners answer that.

I did some searching and some were saying the issue was fixed in F22 engine, Not sure if this is true.

Thanks

SpoiledAP1 is right. The 04/05 are the same. They could be considered the AP1.5 since they have the same seats as the AP1 but the same engine as 06+ AP2s. I have an 04 and don't have any major issues with burning oil. Just like any other car, just have an extra liter of oil on hand in the event youll need to top off. And I remember seeing somewhere on this forum that 04s have some transmission issue but I have yet to encounter any issues; something about the 2nd and 4th gears randomly popping out. You may want to search for this. But if you feel the need for the extra peace-of-mind in having traction control the get MY06+. Regardless of which year you get you won't regret it.

  • (06+) Dash has bubbles, blisters or wrinkles.

  • Wheel bearings can go bad and are pricey.
  • Shifting problems. Don't skip shift
  • Oil consumption. This is difficult to evaluate prior to buying but potential owners should read up on it.
  • Stolen seats
  • Soft top tears and holes
  • Using incorrect jack points
I found what I couldn't find earlier for quick and easy reference, from this thread here:

My 04 doesn't burn a lick of oil... So speak for yourself If the car's been taken care of, it shouldn't burn much oil, if any. The problem was definitely way more common on the AP1's though.

Things I've had to worry about / replace on my 04:

- Clutch master cylinder went out around 70k miles. Check for moisture near / around the clutch pedal and carpet. The seals tend to break down and eventually will slowly leak brake fluid all over the place
- Retorque of the rear axle nuts, didn't have any issues but did it as preventative maintenance
- 2nd gear grind / pop out, it's always had it but it got significantly worse after I mis-shifted once while my CMC was going out and didn't fully disengage the clutch. Only way to mask the problem is to change the transmission fluid often, and as soon as I start getting grinds again flush and refill. I have a spare transmission just incase. Take your time while shifting...

04/05 is the best year, no VSC, no DBW, updated suspension geometry, best OEM wheel design, best interior (red/black two tone with head rest cut out), I'm not biased...

'04 Owner here checking in. I bought mine at 59k too! Now I'm at 88xxx and my car has been excellent. I love drive by cable, I heel toe like a champion every day. I do get 2nd pop out but i change my transmission fluid once a year and it will pop out maybe once in 3 months while completely cold. Pretty much a complete non issue for me.
