Awesome deal! Can't speak about taxes in Florida, but in California I've seen people put down some ridiculous prices for cars and have not had any problems.

It seems like you've really thought this purchase through and won't regret it. Just don't make the gf angry since you're borrowing money from her! Other than that, that is an awesome deal. Sad how I could have saved $5k on my car if I waited it out half a year... aye... enjoy the car!
She's not angry except for the fact that I'm getting one and not her. This has been her dream car for some time, and she's happy that she'll be able to drive and detail it.

She's not too sure about the yellow though!

If something happens, I'll be able to make it poor. I never really stopped living poor, and that's why I'm able to buy my car cash (well, it will be in about a month or two, but basically cash).

And we've been together for nine years, so it's not like a six month relationship that this might cause issues with, regarding the loan, etc.

Thanks for the input, but it was actually about an insurance policy, not a warranty.

But on that note, would a 2004 with 17k miles be covered by any warranty? What were the warranties in 2004?
Sorry, I was multi-tasking and mixed that in with the wrong thread. haha

Main warranty is finished on that, but you could buy an extended warranty if you wanted. Normally if a used car dealership were selling this car, it would sell it certified pre-owned with additional warranty coverage.

I think I'll take my chances as I can fix most things and know people that can help with anything else. Thanks again!

Also, I'll need to have insurance to get a tag. I'm 90-95% sure that I'll be purchasing, but there's always the small chance that something happens and it falls through. What happens if I buy a six month policy, and then I don't end up buying the car? Can I get a full refund? Can I get a refund at all? Will I lose out on some money?
You need to ask your insurance company -- not us.

Do NOT falsify the price which you paid for, it might come back to bite you in the ass one day. If you're going to be poor after buying this car I would seriously think about taking out a small loan to pay for part of it so you still have some cash in your bank account for emergencies (accident, theft, paying the rent, medical bills, etc). You don't have to get a tag up there just to drive it home. Just as long as you have a copy of the Bill of Sale that you and the previous owner signed, you should be good to drive it home and register it there.

Great find and you better let her drive it when you get home.

Sounds like it is a good deal. As far as registering it, I'm pretty sure the car has to be registered to the county in the address you live in. As for insurance, I believe that you don't have to get it before you get the car. Usually, you have a window of time to get it. But then again you will need it to register your car. Like it has been mentioned, it is best to contact the insurance company.

Good luck!

Hey Artric...good luck with the transaction.

In Florida you have 30days to notify your current automobile insurance carrier that you have bought another car. However, it is good to go ahead and get the coverage from day one. All it takes is a phone call to your insurance and the VIN of the car you are buying. They may simply add the premium to your next bill if you pay monthly.

Absolutely use the tag off the car you are selling when transporting the car. If you are pulled over, simply show the bill of sale and indicate the tag is from your trade-in vehicle.

You should register the car in the county in which you reside. Note that sales tax on large purchases is calculated differently. The county tax is only applied to the first $5000 of the purchase price...for the rest of the purchase price the Florida state sales tax (5%) is applied. So assume the purchase is $15k, your tax would be 5000*6.5% + 10000*5% = $825.

It is pretty normal to fudge a bit with the sale price you give to the State. But you will need to have the seller give you a bill of sale with the amount you wish to claim. I would think $13k would not be questioned.

That amount should have little or no impact on the insurance. I don't think I've ever been asked by my agent how much I paid for a car. The insurance will be for the market value no matter what you paid.

BTW...depending on where you live in Florida, you need to put some money aside to buy some seat locks. S2k seat thefts are rampant anywhere from Tampa-Orlando south. Send a PM to Kodokan_4 to order a set. They run about $50.

Also...we have a very active owner community in Florida...post up in our s2ki forum and introduce yourself.
