Hey Artric...good luck with the transaction.

In Florida you have 30days to notify your current automobile insurance carrier that you have bought another car. However, it is good to go ahead and get the coverage from day one. All it takes is a phone call to your insurance and the VIN of the car you are buying. They may simply add the premium to your next bill if you pay monthly.

Absolutely use the tag off the car you are selling when transporting the car. If you are pulled over, simply show the bill of sale and indicate the tag is from your trade-in vehicle.

You should register the car in the county in which you reside. Note that sales tax on large purchases is calculated differently. The county tax is only applied to the first $5000 of the purchase price...for the rest of the purchase price the Florida state sales tax (5%) is applied. So assume the purchase is $15k, your tax would be 5000*6.5% + 10000*5% = $825.

It is pretty normal to fudge a bit with the sale price you give to the State. But you will need to have the seller give you a bill of sale with the amount you wish to claim. I would think $13k would not be questioned.

That amount should have little or no impact on the insurance. I don't think I've ever been asked by my agent how much I paid for a car. The insurance will be for the market value no matter what you paid.

BTW...depending on where you live in Florida, you need to put some money aside to buy some seat locks. S2k seat thefts are rampant anywhere from Tampa-Orlando south. Send a PM to Kodokan_4 to order a set. They run about $50.

Also...we have a very active owner community in Florida...post up in our s2ki forum and introduce yourself.
Hey negcamber - thanks for all the info!

The thing is that I technically don't have a current insurance provider. My car is in my Dad's name and I'm not actually on the policy. It sounds like a scam, but they are the ones who said that it was OK. Anyway, I was a college student at the time, so that's probably why.

And I've recently been riding a Ninja 250 daily. I actually rode a Honda Ruckus for a few months almost exclusively, even though I ride 26 miles to work - each way! It was a bit of a challenge, especially on 40 degree mornings!

I'll continue to be riding the Ninja daily. I'll probably bring in the S2000 1-2 times per week. That way I'll be able to keep her in top shape for many, many years. I don't see why it can't still be in fantastic shape in 2020 with maybe 80k on her.

So back to my situation, it doesn't look like I'll have any other legal option, unless they'll give me a temp tag. My option to use my power of attorney that I had signed from my father (and notorized - used before) to put myself on the title of my other car, then transfer the tag won't work. Looks my girlfriend threw away the paper - must not have looked "important enough". Bleh!

I asked this morning at the Tag agency, and they said that it didn't matter where I registered, and that it would be taxed accordingly, just as if I registered in my county. Hopefully that's right.

And I'm really glad to hear that the sales tax is a little lower. However, isn't Florida tax 6%? I looked into it and confirmed what you said, but looks like it's 6%, not 5 . Looks like I'll save around $50. Meh, wish it was more.

Thanks for the tip on the seat locks. I'm going to avoid any shady areas until I can get a set of them. It's sad that we have to deal with this and those worthless motherf***ers!

I think I'll post over in the Florida forum tomorrow when I finally take receipt and take some pics too!

Thanks again!

+1. Sounds like your financial position is pretty tight there... I'd never drain my gf's account with a purchase of the car. But anyway, good you have an understanding gf.
It's not really too bad. We still have $3k cash on hand, and $6k outsanding from the sale of two cars, plus $1500 coming back from taxes. I'm really only borrowing around $1000 from her. And she doesn't have any real expenses because I pay for almost everything (mortgage, etc). She knows that she owes me and actually volunteered.

She won't take money usually, but she does have a bit of a golden parachute to cash in on if something happens anyway. We'll be ok!

What kind of broke ass insurance company penalizes you for a muffler ticket? I'd be raising hell.

I don't think the price you pay for the car will have anything to do with the cost of insurance. It will be insured at the fair appraised value weather you over pay or under pay. Replacement value has nothing to do with the price you pay.

Do not hesitate on seat locks and do not hesitate on insurance. You need both NOW on an S2K in Florida. Seat theft on an S2K often runs in the neighborhood of $9,000 once you buy all the seat parts, have them assembled and installed and buy the new top fabric they sliced and have it installed. With seat locks (I would also suggest the seat lock stickers for the windows) at least you can still drive the car and any damage they do will be a fraction of the cost of lost seats.

Great Deal on Car. Save the cash and take the loan. Want to avoid interest? Pay the loan off in large chunks to minimize interest.

Never strap yourself for a car...poor decision. Wait a few months, they'll be cheaper and you'll save more money to purchase. Little more cash in the pocket.

Good luck though, my post is not helpful to your questions, but wanted to chime in with my .02

I wouldn't do it, cars are fun, but being broke ruins any fun. Even a Ferrari will not be as much fun a few months in as it would be the first week... the first week EVERY car is a blast, and I still love my S, but it's not the same excitement the first week or two... not enough to justify throwing all my money at it anyway.

A car is also not an investment, don't even refer to it as that, it's a toy. An investment is something that will put money back in your pocket, a car will only take money out, and then when you sell it in a few years, be worth even less.

Why not compromise and get a MY00 for less? It's still an S, IMO the AP1's are just more fun and raw, I purposely looked for one just for the 9k RPM. I got my 01 last year for 12k, you could probably get an 00 for a better deal, you still have an S, you can still have just as much fun with it, but it will be easier on the wallet. Lets face it, if you were so sure about it, you wouldn't be making such a concerned post about it. Owing money, unless it's for an emergency, is never a good thing IMO, it's just a crappy feeling.

It's possible that I might not have been penalized for that. I was penalized and it showed two occurrences. It didn't say how much for each. But it did show up.

I actually enjoy being broke. I'm screwy but it's true. I can afford this car because money has been pooling for a bit. I've bought most things that I already want. Don't think I'm rich though... I have a Master's degree and make less than $40k. I support two people on that money too and have a mortgage.

I'm pretty sure that the car will still be fun after two weeks. I had fun with my Integras for years!

And I agree, a car isn't an investment. Well, my last one was almost. I'm selling it for what I bought it for and could have easily sold it for more... but I hooked up a friend.

And as far as the MY00's... I'd rather just not buy one at all, really. Do it right or not at all. There might be some good ones out there, but I have only seen either junky ones or people who want $10k for ones with 120k miles and a bad top and other small damage. Is that really worth not spending the extra $5k?

And I'm not sure that I really buy into the "Rawness" factor. Less performance isn't better in my book. 700 extra RPMs? 9k doesn't impress me anymore... it used to, but I cruised up at 10k plus on my Ninja when I first saw the car! Sure, the suspension is more stiff, but those components can be swapped more easily than the motor. And the car just looks better, so many improvements. That and 100k miles is definitely work $5k!

Plus, anyway... that carpet center console is... GHETTO! I decided that I just wouldn't be able to live with myself if I had one. I hope I'm not offending anyone. Maybe with red carpet it'd look OK? I don't know what the Honda guys were thinking. And there are so many other deficiencies on the Y2K cars (they're not bad cars, but IMHO the newer ones are so much better)!

Anyway, I have it now and LOVE IT! I'll have to post more soon including pictures. Will need to polish it up tomorrow or Friday.
