I'm too lazy to calculate my MPG. In the 2 years, 3 months I've owned my car I've done it twice. Both on trips from my home here in Washington to my parents house in California.

When I pay for fuel on my credit card I always am given a receipt telling me exactly how much fuel and cost etc.

I keep a pen in the car and scribble down the mileage on the receipt.
Not too hard to calculate the mpg later.

If you have a PDA then you need to try a program called "FUELLOG" . It is great because you type in the numbers and it keeps track of your average mpg, days between fills, miles per tank, total amount spent ,and fuel cost per mile.

Any dramatic changes would be more of an indicator of how the car is driven vs. any real problem with the car. I mean, you can't exactly diagnose any problems if your avg. mpg went from 24.6 to 19.6 in one week. Your time would be better spent checking to make sure a burrito wrapper didn't get sucked into the airbox.

It would be more meaningful if they also factored in price.

I thought that you might be interested in how I track the M.P.G. of my S2000.

I set up this spread sheet. Every time I get gas I mark the milage on the charge card slip. When I get home I enter the date, gallons, price per gallon, ending milage and location. The spreadsheet does the rest. It calculated the mpg, the cost per mile, the average mpg from the beginning, the cumulative gallons used and the total dollars spent on gas.

I also mark the gas station where I purchased the gas. I do this in order to spot a trend. If I see that the mpg after a few tank fulls at any one particular station is lower than the average, I become suspicious that that stations pumps need to be recalibrated. Over the years, I've found that this theory is correct. No one tankful is an indicator, but over time the average mpg overall should be close to the average mpg from any one station.

Oh yes, I also keep all of the receipts. I have everyone since the car was new. Its part of the pedigree of my car.

I'm surprised by the MPG numbers quoted here. I routinely get 18MPG. I put in 9 gallons about every 200 miles. I usually only shift above 6k though. Of course, YMMV.

Cheers
