Thumbs up Calculating MPG

People always ask how many miles people get per tankful of gas. This is not an accurate way to determine if someone is getting better or worse mileage. Some people fill up as soon as the light goes on, others before the light goes on, and others drive 20 miles after the light goes on.

Besides, I'm sure that all the gauges do not read the same.

As someone posted a week or so ago, it is a lot more accurate to simply divide the miles driven (by resetting the trip odometer at each fill) by the amount of gas required to fill the tank.

If people all talked in mpg, it would make posts pertaining to mileage more meaningful and useful.

I always calculate my MPG. On average, I get 26.x MPG, though I've gotten as high as 30 MPG on long trips, and <20 MPG when all day. It's not hard to do, though I could imagine that most people don't really care about gas mileage so don't bother. Actually, I'm not sure why I still bother. . . habit, I guess.

I always do a mental calculation on my MPG at each fill up and reset the tripometer. I run between 25 and 28. Best is 29.

checking mpg is actually a decent indication if something's wrong with your car -
that's why I do it anyway.

if you've been averaging a certain mpg for awhile, and you get a sudden decrease or jump, it's a pretty good sign something major has occurred.

That's a really good point. I usually know I need to fill my tires with air if the MPG drop a bit.

I check them every week or two and the oil every time I get gas.

Not good - imagine going thru a turn at 90% of the car's abillity and having the bead break from the rim due to low tire pressure...

As fall / winter approaches even if your psi is good just remember that for every 10 degree temp change is a 1 psi change

I check my MPG at every fill-up. The nice thing about the S2000 is that when it is down to the last 2-3 bars on the fuel gause, it is almost exactly 10 gallons to fill up. So by resetting the trip odometer at every fill-up, I know exactly what my MPG is. Very simple, and I think a lot of S2000 owners also do the same.
