Default California owners: Out-of-state purchase.. help needed

Anyone purchase their S2000 from another state? I've found my baby, and I've briefly spoken to the dealer that's receiving it. However, when I called a dealer here in the SF Bay Area about receiving it, they were quick to try to make me buy one from them.

How does smogging, licensing/registration, and taxes work out? I'm very anxious to jump on this deal, but I'm concerned about the paperwork.

Thanks in advance

Since the S is a 50-state smog legal CARB certification shouldn't be a problem. I think you would be required to pay such fees as sales tax/registration fees upon registering the vehicle in Cali. I'm sure some of our members from California purchased out-of-state and have first-hand experience doing the above.

I did it. No problems. Just pay for the car out of state and ship it here. I think you have 2 weeks to register it and get it smogged. Make an appointment with DMV to get an inspection. Pay your taxes and registration and thats it. Good luck.

Yes, its that simple. Just make an appointment with the dmv. all you need is for them to make a quick inspection and thats it. Only downfall is you need to get your car smogged 1 year sooner then if you bought it here. our cars are LEV so that will never be an issue anyhow. go get it...

Thanks for the info guys.. gave me the push to put a deposit down. (Notice the "Owner" status )

Convinced the dealer to give me the car at MSRP. Basically only thing I'm paying extra is shipping and they're willing to split it with me. I was very pleased with the way I was treated. The salesman I spoke to realized the point where he should step back and hand over the transaction to a manager. I spoke to the manager and was easily able to get MSRP.

Very pleasant experience so far.
